My god! A good album in 1999!,

This review is from: J Tull Dot Com (Audio CD)
Ian Anderson, Martin Barre et al seem on fine form this year. They have shed the codpeices for chinos, and the hair is lighter and sparcer, but their music has grown tremendously. Especial credit goes to Anderson's writing on Hunt By Numbers and Gift of Roses - a wonderful peice of observational writing, and a good old fashioned love song, which doesn't involve graphic sex. Barre's Guitar work gets back to some tidy, minimal blues, and the slight cyberpunk riff on side one capture a modern feel. A definate must buy. If only all bands could do this........PS - buy the secret language of birds. Don't argue, just buy it!

Despite the terrible title this is a significant improvement on Catfish and Roots. The music is a lot more entertaining and there are some half-decent lyrics. The odd acoustic half-rapped garbage that is "Hot Mango Flush" indicates how musically confused IA had become though before a return to form on his more recent solo albums. Seek these out first.

Middling Album from a fine band though now in cruise control,

Its been a long time since Jethro Tull produced a classic album and this one hasn't changed that. There are enjoyable moments, and I found it pretty accessible, but after the initial few spins I'm rarely tempted to put it on. The .Com element seems like an attempt to gain some element of contemporary relevance, but it didn't work for me. On the upside the rockier Spirals bops along quite nicely and Hunt By Number and She Bends Like a Willow are both fine additions to the Tull cannon.
