I am not in a position to offer a genuine review, as at this date I have only had the set for a few days. But having found the limited information which Amazon attaches to this set, and having searched around, it seems worth providing an accurate listing of the contents of this newly launched box, which brings together the fruits of Herreweghe's long-standing commitment to Bach. So please skip to the listing below, but I've added a few comments to justify the five stars.
Firstly the box offers extraordinarily generous value. It really is a work of art in its own right, with beautiful and appropriate illustrations woven into the sturdy outer box, as well as within the individual 'books', which contain essays and texts. I cannot see the set continuing to be offered at such a low price for long; time will tell.
I've been collecting Bach Cantatas since the late 1970s, when I bought the Richter accounts on lp from DG Arkiv. My favourite set is the almost-complete Suzuki account. Based on what I've heard, Herreweghe's selective approach is sensitive and ideally recorded, which does not surprise me, as I've had his St John Passion since its first release. So much to look forward to...
