Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The clavichord is, of course, a very quiet instrument, but the recording level on this disk has been set absurdly low. The dynamic range is therefore small and the sound quality poor. Much of the time the music is barely above the noise level.

I am not a professional musician, so please take my musical thoughts with a big pinch of salt. I found the performance competent but rather lacklustre. Perhaps it will grow on me.

I play the harpsichord and virginals (not yet well enough for the Goldbergs), but have only played clavichord on a few occasions and found it difficult, so perhaps I am biased. This performance makes me think of having to use the keyboard with such firmness that much of the agility and potential fluency of a plucking instrument (which particularly suits this music) is lost.

I am glad to have the recording in my collection of "Goldbergs", but I would not recommend it as a first time purchase for someone entering the wonderful world of Klavierübung IV.
