Product Description

Product Description

With a voice described by International Record Review as one of the most beautiful Britain has produced in a generation , Elizabeth Watts is now securely established as one of the brightest new talents (The Independent). After training as a chorister at Norwich Cathedral, Elizabeth went on to study archaeology at Sheffield University before attending the Royal College of Music in London. Her many prizes include the 2006 Kathleen Ferrier Prize (UK), the 2007 Outstanding Young Artist Award at the Cannes MIDEM Classique Awards and the Rosenblatt Recital Song Prize at the 2007 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. A former BBC New Generation Artist , she was invited to become an Artist in Residence at London s Southbank Centre in 2010. Now equally in demand as a recitalist, opera singer, and concert artist, she has already appeared at many of the world s leading musical centres and festivals, including the Royal Opera House, London, Wigmore Hall, Welsh National Opera, the BBC Proms, Santa Fe Opera, Boston s Handel and Haydn Society, and has upcoming engagements throughout Europe from Amsterdam to Zurich. Internationally renowned conductor, Harry Bicket, is especially noted for his interpretation of Baroque and Classical repertoire. In 2007 he became Artistic Director of The English Concert, which he has led on tours in the UK, USA, Europe and the Middle East. He has won high praise world wide for his work in opera, including at The Royal Opera Covent Garden, Glyndebourne Festival, Opera North, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, and Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona. He made his debut at The Metropolitan Opera in 2004 in a new production of Rodelinda with Renée Fleming and David Daniels, and returned to conduct Giulio Cesare in 2006 and La clemenza di Tito in 2008. Future projects with The English Concert include a recording featuring Lucy Crowe for harmonia mundi.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Voice To Truly Treasure 9 Feb 2011
By The Wolf TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Elizabeth Watts was born to sing Bach; no doubt about it!
From what we have seen of her luminous career so-far she
was born to sing full-stop. In a fairly long life of listening
I would go as far as to say that Ms Watts has one of the finest
voices to have emerged in England during the past thirty years.

The purity of tone; the beautiful line; the bloom at the top
and the secure middle and lower registers are just a small
part of what makes her so special. Over and above these givens
Ms Watts gets to the heart of the matter in her restrained but
gloriously knowing interpretations of these seventeen pieces.

The English Concert directed by Harry Bicket serves her well.
These are performances of insightful and elegant finesse.
Listen to the Aria and Recitative from the BVW199 Cantata
'Mein Herze Schwimmt Im Blut' for a simply radiant example
of Ms Watts craft. Elegant and refined, her seamless rendition
(with some extraordinarily long breaths!) is an exquisite and
deeply moving interpretation of this sublime composition.

For sheer exultant joy look no further than her take on the first
Aria from the Cantata 'Jauchzet Gott In Allen Landen', BVW 51!
Her consummate grasp of the mercurial runs is really thrilling.
(Mark Bennett's high-flying trumpet part is an absolute hoot too!)

The 'Alleluja' from the same work is another dazzling highlight!
Ms Watts hits every note bang in the middle with fearless aplomb and
Mr Bennett, again, matches her peerless performance step for step.

In every way a truly memorable and uplifting recording.

Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another fabulous offering 2 Feb 2011
By Vic
Format:Audio CD
Another wonderful album from Elizabeth Watts. We were so impressed by her Schubert Lieder that we were keen to buy her new Bach album when it was released - and it certainly doesn't disappoint! Elizabeth truly has one of the most enduring classic voices of the 21st century and her interpretation here is truly deserving of the raving reviews she has had in the press. We would whole heartedly recommend this to any lover of true classics.

2.0 out of 5 stars What a shame! 10 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD
Oh dear..there seems to be something very wrong with this disk when played as a SACD - I can't comment on it as a CD. It is to be quite frank, unlistenable. Whilst the music has the clarity usually associated with SACD recordings, Elizabeth Watts voice was clearly recorded separately, apparently on a cassette recorder in a cellar, and mixed in. This gives the recording a rather odd disjointed quality which, for me, just spoils it completely. If you have a SACD system - think twice about purchasing this recording. What a shame...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Splendid Voice and Refreshing New British Talent 4 April 2011
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Elizabeth Watts is regarded as 'one of the finest British sopranos to have emerged in the last decade. Her reputation is steadily growing as she has performed s a recitalist, opera singer, and concert artist, she has already appeared at many of the world's leading musical centres and festivals, including the Royal Opera House, London, Wigmore Hall, Welsh National Opera, the BBC Proms, Santa Fe Opera, Boston's Handel and Haydn Society, and has engagements throughout Europe from Amsterdam to Zurich. Her roles usually embrace Mozart and Strauss but her she makes her solo recording debut with a selection of works by Bach. In addition to singing the complete Cantatas 'Mein Herze Schwimmt in Blut' and 'Jauchzet Gott in Allen Landen' she includes individual arias from four other cantatas. She is ably accompanied here by Harry Bicket and The English Concert. While Watts' voice may not be the perfect 'Bach voice', these performances are elegant and the collection is one to treasure. 3.0 out of 5 stars A pessimistic and melancholic cd.... 10 Nov 2013
By Abdullah ^evki YURTVERMEZ - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Elizabeth Watts's voice beautifull... I cannot say something about her voice... But her interpretation of Bach's cantatas an arias is pessimistic and melncholic... There is no joy and light... For exemple if you listen this cd in sunny Sunday morning, sky can turn dark suddenly, black clouds can come, an anxiety covers slowly your soul... When I listen this cd, in every time, imagine myself in ruins of a medieval church or in an old graveyard... A proposal for you, you can read a gothic story from Victorian time with this cd. Watts's voice comes from deep and heavenly place... This cd can use also as soundtrack in a vampire thriller maybe...
