I first heard Jaroussky sing in a dvd of Landi's Il Sant'Alessio, conducted by William Christie. I thought immediately that this was a countertenor with a difference! Nothing forced or artificial about this sound, and an almost ethereal sweetness. He is, if anything, even more outstanding on this disc.
I should say that everything about this cd is outstanding in my opinion; a model for anyone who wished to expose the general public to the works of a still not widely performed composer. The booklet is attractively produced with period portraits and excellent background notes (if a little too fat to fit comfortably in its case!). The instrumentalists have an impeccable sense of style, and the choice of music is varied and unfailingly interesting. It is fascinating to listen to arias written in 1778, when Mozart and his old teacher were briefly staying together in Paris. Do I detect a certain amount of cross-fertilisation? Again, full marks for this wonderful disc of music from an unjustly neglected master!
