Biography

Alexei Lubimov is widely recognised as both a champion of new music and an insightful interpreter of classical and baroque music. In 1968 in Moscow he premiered new works by Terry Riley and John Cage, and through the 1970s specialized in early music, also an enduring passion. His first ECM recital “Der Bote” (2000) scans history from C.P.E. Bach to Valentin Silvestrov and Tigran ... Read more in Amazon's Alexei Lubimov Store

Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The main event here is the mighty Piano Sonata No.2: `Concord, Mass. 1840-1860` - all 47 minutes of it. It`s an unignorable, massive musical homage in four movements to Emerson, Hawthorne, The Alcotts, and Thoreau, luminaries of the area where Ives grew up, inspirations in themselves as writers, philosophers and exemplars of a certain way of thinking and of living.
The ever inventive, invariably witty Ives naturally attempts to give some sense in music of the characters of each, though one can easily enjoy this lengthy work in its own right. It`s played by Alexei Lubimov with great dexterity as well as the necessary clarity for such incident-packed music.
It also appears to be one of the few recordings which includes Ives's 'optional' brief parts for viola (Laurent Verney) and flute (Sophie Cherrier) in "Emerson" and "Thoreau" - most pianists, perhaps for logistical reasons as much as anything, choose to play these solo.
The three brief Quarter-tone Pieces for two pianos are, frankly a riot. One of the instruments is tuned a quarter-tone lower than the other, the results sounding as if either you or the pianists - or Ives himself, more likely - has been at the bourbon. They only last ten minutes, but they are ten of the most unexpected, downright off-the-wall minutes you`ll have heard for a while, at least from a `classical` composer.
But then Ives cheerfully broke the rules again and again in his music, something for which I am eternally grateful to him. He never does so in a humourless or academic way, but rather as one who is discovering what needs to be said, and how best to say it.
Pierre-Laurent Aimard joins Lubimov on second piano, the two of them presumably having the time of their lives.

This disc is quite wonderful.
