Book Description

The fifth and final instalment of Martha Long's bestselling memoirs

Product Description

Martha is now in her thirties. Her daughter has left home and she is lonely and vulnerable. The hard knocks have taken their toll on her health, and as she looks into the years still lying ahead of her, she shakes her head, feeling she hasn't the heart or the strength to go on.

As she teeters on the brink of a nervous breakdown, a phone call summons ghosts from the past. She discovers that one of the family is dead and the others need her help. Martha returns and when she comes face to face with the evil, psychotic Jackser, she can no longer suppress the nightmares of her childhood.

A suicide attempt sees her admitted to the 'mad house', where a hunger strike takes her even nearer to death. But finally she sees a chink of light at the end of the tunnel. Could love in an unexpected form pull her back from the brink?

I am going to be writing some spoilers so don't read if you haven't read the book! I started off the book confused, so I went back to the very first one and started them all from the beginning. Once I got to this one I realised she was writing backwards.

I thought that she had missed out a huge chunk of her life as she didn't want to share it but as the book progressed I realised she was looking back at events in her life; so in effect the book reads backwards! but I was still a bit ignorant of the father that she writes about, as she doesn't for some reason name him in this book but as I had read them back to back I realised she meant Ulick, and it also goes on to explain how they got married and how she got out of the convent for unmarried mothers.

But as I got further on the angrier and angrier I got, I had to stop reading as I thought if I see the words "the poor ma" once more I will throw this book through the window, the poor ma my left eye! I am not saying that any of Martha's story is untrue but I know a little bit about basic psychology and I know that it's very difficult to sever the bonds with a mother and usually the abused child will only cut complete ties with the mother is the most severest abuse cases, and I for one think that if half of Martha's story is true then this classes as severe abuse - that feckless excuse for a woman actually left Martha out to die. Most people wouldn't treat an animal in that way (when Martha had nowhere to go after the convent and before she collapses from pneumonia, she visits that woman, who then promptly asks her for money and throws her back out on the streets.)

So that makes me wonder how Martha can go round and give her mother money and buy her clothes and do everything that she does for the whole family knowing that to them she is just a money horse, a resource in basic terms. My review is so long as I am wondering just how much of these books are fiction. I know the 1950's was no place for a child of an unwed mother but I am struggling to believe it all now especially with how loving Martha seems to be towards her mother and how much she protects and loves her it really comes across in the book. Let's not forget this woman willingly gave her daughter (in all sense of the terms) to Jackser she knew what he was doing to her yet she willingly allowed it to happen.

In the book Martha hints that her mother was a bit simple, but I completely disagree she isn't mad just exceptionally bad and was cute enough to hide it.

On the plus side I will be buying the next book as I would like to see how the love triangle turns out and who Martha had her further two children with.

I have read all of Martha Long's books and I am an ardent fan. Each book always left me feeling emotional and I couldn't wait to read the next and find out how her life turns out. Although I enjoyed this book, I don't think it was as good as her others. It is centered around the hospital where she is sent after a suicide attempt. I felt the hospital story lines were dragged out a bit unbelievable. The end of the book re-sparked my interest in her personal life and had it continued like this I would have read on forever. It didn't however and
I was left waiting for the next book to come along to tell me what I have always wanted to know..."What does the future hold between Martha and Father Ralph?" Would rate 4/5 and would recommend.

Not so good.... 5 Oct 2011

I was soooo looking forward to reading this after loving all the previous books by Martha Long. It started off well and fully captured my interest but I really felt that the middle section was dragged out and lost momentum. I hate saying this but it almost felt rather self aware and formulaic in the way it was written. I couldn't help feeling that the author had become aware of the style that had worked previously and consciously applied that here to meet a publishing dedline. That may be unfair but it all just felt as if it was written with less care and in more of a rush particularly in the middle! having said that the previous books were fantastic and I am sure there will be another to follow which I will still read!
