Product Description

Product Description

By 1984, powerhouse vocalist Stephanie Mills had achieved consistent hit-making status in the U.S. thanks to nine albums and a slew of hit singles that had established the former Broadway star of The Wiz as a potent and dynamic recording artist and live performer. Released in September 1984, I VE GOT THE CURE, Stephanie s third (and final) album for Casablanca Records became a best-seller thanks to now-classic soul and dance smash and club favourite, The Medicine Song which became a Top 30 UK hit and a Top 10 US R&B hit. Produced by master musician and funk meister George Duke with additional production by David Hawk Wolinski (formerly of the group Rufus), I VE GOT THE CURE fused the techno-funk rhythms of the day with Stephanie s high-energy vocals. This SoulMusic Records expanded edition includes three bonus tracks including a six-minute-plus Mark Berry 12 mix of The Medicine Song. Other standouts on the album (a Top 10 R&B album in the US) include Edge Of The Razor, Rough Trade and the highlight ballads Give It Half A Chance and Everlasting Love. Includes notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring with quotes from producer George Duke.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Album Showcasing A Stellar Singer 23 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Anyone hearing this album, be it for the first time, or as a trip down memory lane, will immediately be hit by the fact that Stephanie Mills is an incredible vocalist, with a range and tone many singers would kill for. For me, this album represents her creative peak, ranging from high octave dance to glossy R&B, expertly produced by Rufus producer "Hawk" and George Duke. Throw whatever style you like at Ms Mills and she will deliver in spades. Many divas with big screamy voices have only one setting - loud, here I always felt Stephanie displayed that she could be the power house, but also exhibit the control of a real singer when demanded, delivering both power and emotion that many of her contemporaries simply could not. There are beautiful ballads ("Everlasting Love"), 80s new wave ("Outrageous" which borrows more than a little from Princes' "1999") and chart hits too.

Although not a huge commercial success, the album did spawn a UK top 30 hit, the clever "Medicine Song" - a powerhouse production with some serious hooks and vocal gymnastics to match. It is one of my personal favourite records of 1984 and I was delighted to see the 12" mix is included (but not the dub, for which there is room on the disc, the release loses a star for this). "In My Life", the minor hit follow-up, is also included (although the single mix is absent, again a disappointment). US single "Edge Of The Razor", another hi-energy killer, does benefit though from being included as an additional 12" and dub. Sadly neither of these follow-up singles quite had the wow factor of "Medicine Song" and so the album never really had the long term support of successful singles to reach a wider audience, which is probably why it was her last for Casablanca.

The artwork is, thankfully, reproduced at near full size.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can cure me anytime!!! 30 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
An excellent 80s album given the remaster treatment and comes up trumps! Complete with bonus tracks (a couple of remixes) all n all a fine addition for any Stephanie Mills fans collection. Never being a fan of the 80s dub mixes (very often just an over percussive instrumental) i could do without those but the quality of the vocal and the clarity of it on these remasters makes it an essential purchase. Give yourselves a treat!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Stephanie! 27 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Stephanie is the Princess of Soul, and she's on top form here. Everlasting Love is worth the purchase price alone - shame it's not the rare extended 45 version. My only other complaint is the over-saturated artwork; too many reissues suffer from the same problem, sadly... Anyway, that aside, go ahead and treat yourself to the cure, Mills style!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not her signature style, but worth checking out 24 Oct 2007
By Glen Zimmerman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Stephanie Mills went for a more pumped up synth-pop style with this album, which disappointed some people and is not a completely engaging listen all the way, but is worth checking out for the song "Undercover", in which her voice is still very high-quality, and the synth riffs in that song are pretty infectious too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Medicine Song!! 16 Dec 2013
By James Fenos - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Great underrated album by Ms Mills, on this album she goes for more of a dance genre, George Duke produced a few tracks, one being the underrated "Edge Of The Razor'" and this reissue contains the 12" mix and the dub of this single. The number one dance cut "The Medicine Song" gets the 12" bonus track also. The mastering is quiet but that's okay, does noting to deter this from being a great reissue
