I posted this earlier to the oxm.co.uk forums. Here goes -
I haven't played MW2 (I know I need to and I will soon), and I have MW3 in my possession but I'm staggered by the amount of negative press its getting from you gamers and its only been a little over 19 hours.
Take for example a website called Metacritic. It take all scores and does an average score of critics and users. The XBOX 360 version of MW3 out of 518 user ratings, 380 have given it the big thumbs down (lower than 5 outta 10) thats an average user score of 2.8 outta 10 and the PS3 is no better thats only 2.1 average outta 10.
So let me get this right, the most eagerly anticipated title ever, the biggest launch ever, and possibly (I don't know for sure) millions of you gamers queing to buy it from midnight and you all think its crap. I know the critic reviews aren't as generous as some first thought either, but its a generous 90 outta 100 from over 41 critic's. So its gotta be good somewhere.
Said it before and I'll say it again. The game just came out today, the millions of fans who love the series are going to be playing it and enjoying it for what it is, leaving critics who consistently rate the single player campaign poorly, fans of other games such as BF3 and the small but vocal minority who aren't playing the game for technical reasons or due to dislike to rate the game on sites like the ones you mention to try and feel as though they are making a difference by speaking up their views, as seen here in some amazon reviews.
If you wanted a true opinion, see how many people will be playing it for the weeks and months to come.
Thing is people only write reviews this quickly when they are angry. As JeeJaySee said, people won't feel the need to review it until they are finished or think about it, they will just enjoy it. I for one am quick to complain about something, but never quick to praise. Just like the hundreds on Amazon who haven't received it, there are thousands that have.
Skinner is right, angry people will complain straight away. Some people will be trying to get their reviews in as soon as possible though. Just so they can say they have finished it already.
There is also alot of conflict between BF and COD players, if you think the reception of MW3 is bad you should have seen the Amazon.com page for Battlefield3 on release date! The reviews were split 50-50 between one star and 5! Faaaar too many COD fanboys in the states slating the game and giving it a bad review when they clearly hadn't even played the game!
