Review

"A wonderful collection of poems that were written from the heart...a wonderful gift and read for anyone wishing to understand not only teachers, but all people who dedicate their lives to service." Don Blankenship, Amazon Top Reviewer. "Helena Harper manages to offer in this brief but highly readable and refreshing collection of poems...many warmly humorous anecdotes about pupils, parents, the trials of being an educator and a disciplinarian simultaneously, and in the most entertaining poems in the book Harper shares the private lives of those whose 'day job' extends into every facet of their being. Harper writes with disarming clarity, poems unfettered by constraints of rhyme or meter, but instead allows her thoughts and reactions to many aspects of education to flow like a private conversation...Highly entertaining, well-written poetry." Grady Harp, Amazon Top Reviewer. "Helena Harper's poems have a warm, conversational style...and an incisive, dry wit that makes you want to read on." Charlotte Moore-Bick, Attain Magazine. "I could almost smell the wood from the building, and hear the excited chattering between classes. I could also feel the rush of the hectic lives of teachers...a tasteful and delightful collection of poems." Dallas D'angelo-gary, Amazon reader.

Product Description

No doubt you remember your life at school as a pupil - the long lessons, stringent rules, chaotic classrooms - but what was it like from the teacher's perspective? Did they savour the experience of setting and marking our homework? Did they get a kick out of writing our reports? And, most intriguingly, what did they get up to in the staffroom? If it's all been a mystery up till now, you need to follow Helena Harper into this alternative school world of coffee addiction, frantic marking, lesson-planning and inspections. She answers all of your questions and more, and her insightful, evocative and often sardonic descriptions leave you more appreciative of the trials and tribulations (and the occasional pleasures) of being the dragon in front of the whiteboard. It's a Teacher's Life...! will open the eyes of pupils who always thought that teachers didn't exist outside of school hours...On the other hand, with such a long roll-call of meetings, assessments and after-hours activities, perhaps they were right all along!

If I am completely honest, I began reading this book simply because I had been asked to, and I should point out that I wasn't wholly looking forward to the prospect as I have never actually been a fan of poetry that doesn't rhyme! That probably doesn't make a lot of sense to most fans of poetry and certainly never has from most who I have said that to in the past; but I said would review the book and so I read on.

As I read each poem on my journey through the book, I found myself slowly but surely putting my negative subconscious thoughts to one side; and I have to say that whilst I am still not 100% happy in myself with poems that don't rhyme, even I can appreciate the amusing perspective of a Teacher's life in school that is portrayed by Helena Harper in this book!

Any Teacher, or indeed individual that has been in a school, even as a child, can appreciate the witty, often ironic, and occasionally sarcastic charm that Helena brings with her anecdotes.

All in all, a definitive thumbs up from me - 5 stars. And with that coming from someone who strongly disliked poetry altogether before reading "It's a Teachers Life!", particularly that which doesn't rhyme; if I can find it amusing, then you will certainly be entertained!
