Creative, different, but I want even more creativity from him...,
By David Wood "dwood2001" (South Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's Only Time (Audio CD)
Drake Bell has been on my radar for quite a while. His swing influences and love of great musicians like the Beetles automatically made me keep watch on him; that says potential straight away. His first album, Telegraph, was wonderful and so I was eagerly awaiting this one.I was going to say it didn't disappoint, but that wouldn't quite be true since I expect so much from him. As far as modern albums go, it truly didn't disappoint. It's great, it really is. He understands how songs should be structured, with sections that vary enough to be musically interesting while not being too different to be jarring, unless that's the effect you're going for. His use of more old fashioned song-styles is great too. It could be even better. I really think he has great potential to produce a flawless album one day, but it's not quite there. Of course artists who produce things of that quality are extremely rare anyway, so I'm being mega-critical. I'd just say that the extended song that is "Fallen For You" blending into "Rusted Silhouette" and then "Break Me Down" could have been a bit better. I admire the idea of doing something like that, but musically it wasn't quite interesting enough for me. Any of those three songs alone would be fine, but I feel that the three songs together lacked variation in texture. All three songs had similar shapes and feels, and the sequence of guitar chords wasn't especially original in any of them. I think he needs to look at each song and ask himself "does this really sing the way 'Found a Way' did?" Then ask, "is this musically as interesting and well structured as songs like 'Fool the World' and 'In the End'"? If he does that he might produce something incredible one day. He also needs to find his soul again. His writing of this album came after surviving a horrific car crash; he was happy to be alive and the songs are happy as a result. But in his old album, some of his best songs were more contemplative: 'Telegraph' and 'Somehow' are some of my favourite songs from any artist... certainly in my top 40 anyway. But even for now this is a very impressive album that beats most pop music for quality, and a good handful of Rock bands as well. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

I owmed his first album "Telegraph" and I thought that he had reached his goal. But this album is even better. It has a 60s music theme to it and some influences from his favourite arists such as the Beatles-espically John Lennon and the artist he admires the most Bob Dylan. Some of his best songs on this album are: "Rusted Sillouate", "Fool The World"- which has a guest apperance of Backhouse Mike and "End It Good"- which has a really inspiring 60s theme to it.

After Drake's first album, telegraph, I couldn't see how he could get much better. But in this album, we can see how he has grown and matured both as a person and as a musician. Excellent, a MUST BUY for all Drake Fans, as well as non fans! Because after you listen to this you will become a fan, I guarantee ya!Sam
