Product Description

Book Description

In 1916, at the age of fifty four, a slight, short sighted
diffident unassuming country vicar became an Army Chaplain.

Theodore Bayley Hardy was destined to become the most decorated
non-combatant in the First World War. He was to be awarded the Victoria
Cross, the D.S.O., and the M.C.

Sadly, he was to die of wounds only a few days before the Armistice.

This book tells his story.

4.0 out of 5 stars The story of the most decorated non-combatant WWI chaplain, 25 Oct 1999
By A Customer
I have been persuaded to lend this book twice having used the story in sermons and have never seen the book again. It is a short, compelling story with text and facsimile excerpts from documents and photographs of the life of the Reverend Theodore Bayley Hardy inspired on the discovery by the author of his gravestone in a country church. This gentle man was parish priest and local school headmaster when WWI began. He entered the Army Chaplaincy and gained the hearts of many service men, defying the typical image of Chaplain. By day he performed the usual priestly and chaplaincy tasks but by night he would work the trenches dropping in with his inimitable "It's only me!" to bring comfort and moral and spiritual support in the nightmare of wars.

Decorated twice with the Victoria Cross for valorous recoveries of injured soldiers he died of complications from a wound he suffered in the last months of the war. Hardy was embarrassed by his medals and a man as remarkable for his humility and faith as his courage.

Now I have to buy another copy!
