second to none 18 May 2006
Format:Audio CD
Some music critics like to be all coy and bashful about Phoenix, claiming that the main reason for their success is the attention to detail and immaculate production, exemplified on both previous albums.

Rubbish! What makes Phoenix brilliant is that they make catchy, fun, hook-laden, 3-minute summery pop-wonders without any hint of pretentiousness.

And this album is Phoenix distilled to their most immediately intoxicating essence, coming over as a curious cross between the Strokes and the Housemartins, particularly on the irrestibly jangly 'Consolation Prizes' and 'Rally'. With little evidence of post-production or studio trickery these songs were made to be played live!

How these guys are not huge is beyond me. The first two albums "united' and 'alphabetical' were both brilliant but covered a range of styles that was perhaps just a little too varied for mainstream tastes.

The new CD 'it's never been like that' is just as good as the others but much more consistent. Don't be fooled by the fans whinging about 'all those guitars' - sure, this album has a little less in the way of slick West Coast MOR production values but its packed with catchy hooks and full of charm. It's a real grower and if there is any justice it'll be one of the albums of the summer. Utterly utterly brilliant. They are playing a lot of the festivals this summer - I recommend buying the CD and catching them live.

Hot Damn! 24 Aug 2006

This is an unbelievable album - the one to get if you want to sample Phoenix at their best. Its Jinggly Jangly, life is good stuff. Too much talent for words here. They're hook and melody masters. By far the best album I've bought this year. Hit the purchase button with confidence.

Great AND French!
For those of us who thought Joe the taxi was the best France could offer should hear this. 'Napoleon Says' has toes tapping and there isn't a dud one on this album. Read more

My God it's good...
This is just about the perfect pop record, really. And French!! Astonishing, and astonishing that they're not a household name. Is there no justice in the world?
