Book Description

5 Feb 1996
A picture book for young children by a three-times Smarties Book Prize Winner. The toddler in this story is celebrating his birthday and wants to make a cake. So he asks his animal friends for help in getting the ingredients. The chicken gets some eggs, the bear gets flour, the cat gets butter and milk, the pig gets a pinch of salt, the dog gets sugar and the monkey gets some cherries. Then all of them help to make the cake - and eat it, of course! Helen Oxenbury won the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1979, and her other books include the "First Picture Books" "Tom and Pippo" and three Smarties Book Prize-winning picture books, "So Much" (also Winner of the 1994 Kurt Maschler Award), "Farmer Duck" and "We're Going On A Bear Hunt" (both of which were also Highly Commended for the Kate Greenaway Medal), "Animal Allsorts" and "Puzzle People".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for toddlers 26 Oct 2006
By arista
Format:Paperback
This is one of my favourite children's books. I bought it for my eldest son, and stupidly gave it away. I borrowed it from the library for my middle son, and now I'm going to buy it again for my youngest son.

It's a simple story about a little boy making himself a birthday cake with the help of his animal friends.

In my experience, toddlers love to hear stories about things they know about from their own lives, like making cakes and celebrating birthdays.

This story is a little different to the everyday, in that the animals help to make the cake, but the surroundings are familiar, and there is a happy scene at the end in which everyone is sitting around the birthday table. There is also a little twist on one page when it looks as though the little boy is going to do a 'Little Red Hen' and eat the cake all on his own.

There is a lot of word repetition which helps young children follow along, and the illustrations are friendly, gentle and reassuring without being soppy, and have the familiar Helen Oxenbury everyday humour.

A lovely book for toddlers and pre-schoolers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Story and Beautiful Illustrations 20 Dec 2011
By S. R. Lee - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is such a sweet book and the illustrations are calming and beautifully drawn. I never wondered about the gender as some reviewers have mentioned. I personally thought it was a girl to myself but never mentioned that to my children. I like that the author intended for the child and the animals to be gender neutral.

My children really enjoyed this book and it was a joy for me to read it to them. The illustrations really make all the difference. And I like that the story line is a little reminiscent of The Little Red Hen (with a happy ending for all) or Stone Soup. I'd highly recommend this book and will consider giving this as a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and rare, gender-neutral picture book 14 Nov 1999
By J. Byrne - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
It's interesting that some reviewers identify the child as aboy, when the author has in fact written and illustratied this storyto be gender-neutral. The child (and animals, for that matter) can be either male or female -- and that was the author's intention, as described in a note in the book. When the main characters in so many children's books are male for no reason other than the fact that Male is the default gender in our world, how nice for girls to be able to see themselves in the main character of this story (and how nice for parents to not have to change names and pronouns to provide a more balanced perspective when reading to our children).

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book! 21 Feb 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
It is funny that the description of this book online says the main character is a boy, when in fact the author leaves the gender to be decided by the reader. My children (3 boys & 1 girl) love this book, and no one ever says anything about boy or girl. We have given this book many times as a birthday gift and have always had rave reviews for it. Highly reccommed for every house with children!
