Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

The latest release on the FTD label brings us another concert. This time the focus is on August 1974. Unfortunately the show isn't complete, as the producers explain in the notes that's because the average show in August 1974 was too long for a tape. The tape of this particular show from the 24th (Midnight) ran out after "If You Talk In Your Sleep" and therefore the producers decided to complete it with a part of the August 29 Dinner Show for the "complete concert" experience.
For the design of the cover we point towards all other FTD-reviews, but we have to admit that there is some extra info, and all in all the cover is more than okay.
The show itself is pretty good. Gladly Elvis isn't rambling too much, like in other shows we have from this engagement. In a lot of songs he sounds like he is in "cruise control mode": not really inspired, except for a few demanding things like the ending of "The Wonder Of You" or "How Great Thou Art". Maybe we are just spoilt, and are not as anxious to have a new show like a couple of years ago, before the soundboard-age. Still this CD gives almost 80 minutes (!) of listening pleasure, with a few highlights. "It's Midnight" is always a pleasure to listen to and "I'm Leavin'" is certainly one of the more attractive tracks. We prefer "Spanish Eyes" without overdone trumpets, but it is at least a more "rare" live track. "Polk Salad Annie" gets almost irritating during the final, oh how we prefer the early versions. Gladly "If You Talk In Your Sleep" makes up a lot for the PSA-punishment. Jorgensen & Co.

In 1974, especially during the march tour and this Vegas engagement; Elvis was arguably a better live performer than he had ever been.
A lot has been said about the infamous monologue on the closing night of this engagement. Why? I believe that he simply spoke his mind about magazines weiting roumours and "trash" about his personal life.......if you own "Desert Storm", you'll know what I mean. He gave very very few interviews, some press conferences for "big" events, but nothing on TV or in a book; so this was as good a way as any to get a point across.

Anyway, "It's Midnight" and it's the King, live and loud. Elvis repertoire at this time was as varied as ever, perhaps better than ever. The likes of "newer" songs such as the haunting "It's Midnight" and funky "If You Talk in Your Sleep" are performed magnificently.
"Early Morning Rain" and "I'm Leavin" are always a pleasure to hear, the latter, especially as this song really is tremendous and should have been a huge hit.
The entire CD is excellent, from rock, country and funk to bombastic versions of "How Great Thou Art" (always a standout) and a lesser performed after 1970...."Wonder of You."
Buy this along with the Las Vegas Live box set, this will give the full insight into Elvis Vegas concerts from 1956, to his amazing live comeback in 69 right through 1970, 72, 74 & 75.

A "real" live concert the likes of which true fans have been waiting 30 years for.The voice is fantastic, the jokes ,well its as near as we get to being there! I wonder if the tape did run out.... A definite for proper fans' collections, this is one of the best live performances I have heard.

Perhaps after so many Vegas performances, the "King" was bored with this particular routine. This FTD release. great sound quality notwithstanding, reflects a very dis-interested and unfocussed Elvis in 1974 merely going through the motions.
From his voice to intervening monologues, he clearly would rather be elsewhere. Nevertheless, he delivers strong performances of "It's Midnight" and "How Great Thou Art".
Overall, very disappointing.

It's getting late and I know that's when I am weak 3 Sept. 2003
By Johnny Heering - Published on Amazon.com

This is yet another Elvis concert CD. This is an above average concert from August 1974, with below average sound quality. It is in mono, with okay but not great clarity. The main attraction here is that the concert features several songs that were rarely performed live. "It's Midnight", "Big Boss Man", "I'm Leavin'", "Softly As I Leave You", "Spanish Eyes", "If You Talk in Your Sleep" and "Early Morning Rain" are rarely found on Elvis live recordings. This is not essential Elvis, but if you are a completist, you will want to get this. Here is the complete track listing:
1. See See Rider
2. I Got a Woman/Amen
3. Love Me
4. If You Love Me
5. It's Midnight
6. Big Boss Man
7. Fever
8. Love Me Tender
9. All Shook Up
10. The Wonder of You
11. I'm Leavin'
12. Softly As I Leave You
13. Spanish Eyes
14. Hound Dog
15. You Gave Me a Mountain
16. Polk Salad Annie
17. Introductions
18. If You Talk in Your Sleep
19. Why Me Lord?
20. Teddy Bear/Don't Be Cruel
21. How Great Thou Art
22. Let Me Be There
23. Talk
24. Early Morning Rain
25. Hawaiian Wedding Song
26. Can't Help Falling in Love

A Sad Preview Of Things To Come 8 Aug. 2010
By Kevin Hoffman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The liner notes to this CD state that the producers chose this concert because of Elvis' outstanding performance. Well, I beg to differ on that one! There's nothing outstanding here. Elvis seems to be on auto-pilot much of the time. And when he's not singing he's talking...a lot! Presley's August '74 shows in Vegas were very long, probably due to his increasing drug usage which tended to make him chatty and sometimes downright silly. On no other CD will you hear Elvis make a joke about tampons. And if you're interested in his jewelry, you can hear Elvis go into detail about how he got his jeweler to find him a "fruitcake" shaped diamond! Yep, if that's the kind of stuff you want, it's all here.

His speech is alarmingly slurred at times, a harbinger of worse times to come. This show was just several days before his famous angry outburst over those "dangerous" drug rumors people were spreading about him. Elvis' mental boiler room was just heating up here, as he explains why he missed a show several days earlier. Just remember though, it had nothing to do with drugs!

On top of all this the concert has sub-par sound quality for a FTD release. If you're an Elvis completist, as I am, then you may want to add this to your collection just so you can say you have it. But if you want to have a good sampling of Presley performances in the 70s, there are far better choices out there.

Awesome! Elvis rocks! He is not even from my generation more my mother's. He is the KING! When he sings Spanish Eyes and shouts Arriba! at the start of the song... it is so cool! Love it! The most handsome man ever and the best performer of all time! No one come close! There is no one from my generation that can compare.
