Led by the fantastic lead vocals of Johnny Tanner and the stinging guitar of Lowman Pauling, the gospel-infused harmonies and the vibrant recordings of the "5" Royales were and still are integral to the metamorphosis of R&B into soul.
Pauling was and remains the idol of Staxs premier guitarist Steve Cropper, who has written a brief note for this CD and is featured in the booklet. Billy Vera has also written a piece for this project.
"Dedicated" contains all of the Royales major King R&B hits, including two all-time classics of rocknroll in Think (revived by James Brown in the 70s) and Dedicated To The One I Love.
It also contains many tracks that have never been reissued on UK CD, several of which have never been reissued at all.
Another superlative addition to Aces series of classic King CDs by the labels most eminent performers.

Great collection with one of the hardest grooving r&b vocal groups including Lowman Pauling's great guitar playing.

It's Getting Easier, But Is It Fair......???,

A quick review on the product at hand...the usual ACE RECORDS quality treatment, great sound, great booklet, great pictures, etc. Even if you have the excellent, but out-of -print RHINO 2 Disc Anthology: Monkey Hips & Rice and the equally awesome sounding Very Best of on COLLECTABLES (yes, COLLECTABLES! I know that the sound quality of a lot of their older CD's leaves a lot to be desired, but all their KING RECORDS Remasters with "Audio by Little Walter DeVenne" have been superb...), you would still need this ACE set for the tracks "Behave Yourself" (KING 4740-B), "Every Dog Has His Day" (KING 4770-A), "Do Unto You" (KING 4819-B), "I Ain't Getting Caught" (KING 4830-A), "I Could Love You" (KING 4901-A), "It Hurts Inside" (KING 5266-B), "Why" (KING 5357-A) and "(Something Moves Me) Within My Heart" (KING 5357-B). In fact, to own a Digitally Remastered version of every track The Royales cut for KING you were STILL two tracks short until just recently, with the release of EL TORO's Right Around the Corner Rare & Undiscovered Gems finally filling in the gaps! Check out that page for my review. At last the "5" Royales fan/lover/obssessive collector can own a great sounding version of all the singles cut for KING RECORDS in the 1950's. To quote one of their old APOLLO smashes, "ALL RIGHTY!"......For further "5" ROYALES listening pleasure try All Righty: Apollo Recordings and Catch That Teardrop - The Best of the Home of the Blues 1960-1964 Sessions. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful:

Thank you Steve Cropper,

Well I must admit before Steve Cropper released Dedicated, I had never heard of the 5 Royales, a regional mid-Southern powerhouse who had a productive 15 year career and nary a national hit. They are quite simply amazing! Lowman Pauling, their guitarist, is quite simply incredible--the lead singer Johnny Tanner is astonishing in his rough but sweet voice. And the songs! Such great songs! This is the Stax sound, the James Brown sound, in embryo, amazing and crucial music. Not only is it is historically interesting, it is really great music fun and finger popping.
So Thank you Steve Cropper--you introduced me to a great great soul group. Crank this music, crank it baby. I also agree with the other review--the Ace production here is exceptional. This is a very nice CD set. |
