This is absolutely brilliant. On the one hand it follows the standard rock fairy tale:
1) young man joins band
2) band makes it very big
3) success goes to man's head
4) various things go up the man's nose/ in his veins/ down his throat in industrial quantities
5) man faces life-changing crisis
6) man lives to tell the tale
But this book is so much more. The fact that the band in question is Guns n' Roses means you've got a hell of a good story, so this is no ordinary rock fairytale. Then there's McKagen himself who really comes over as sharp, thoughtful and talented. So far as I can tell this isn't one of these ghosted 'as-told-to' type biogs. McKagen's been doing journalism for a few years now, he really is a good writer and tells his story well.
Shocked into sobriety by his pancreas exploding (yes, you read correctly) McKagen spectacularly turned his life around. Hence the other twist that makes this a cut above the average rock autobiog: McKagen isn't just a survivor, he's a a born winner. Not only did he go on to make it big all over again with Velvet Revolver, but he also studied for a university degree and now also runs his own wealth management company.
Ace of the bass, songwriter, rocker, survivor, businessman and now witty and honest writer: McKagen is certianly a man worth reading about.
