Amazon.co.uk Review

It's delightful to see Meryl Streep come into her own as a romantic comedian in her later career years--after all the accolades, the Oscars, the serious-as-marble dramatic roles. Streep is in fact a true cutup, as she has demonstrated in films like Mamma Mia and Julie & Julia--and she gets the guy. So if Nancy Meyers's It's Complicated is perhaps a bit facile in the plot department, it's saved by a splendid romp of a performance by Streep (as Jane), along with her two leading men, Alec Baldwin (Jane's ex-husband, Jake) and Steve Martin (her supposed boyfriend, Adam). Meyers, as she did in Something's Gotta Give and Baby Boom, turns notions of over-the-hilldom--at least for women--on their ear. Streep's Jane is a contented, affluent divorcée with excellent taste in furnishings, happily about to preside over an empty nest and feeling just fine about it. Who should bump into, and ruin, this perfect solitude but Jane's ex, Jake, played to a pompous (and hilarious) fare-thee-well by Baldwin. "Turns out I'm a bit of a slut," chirps the sexually awakened Jane. The beauty of It's Complicated is that it really isn't all that complicated--its chemistry depends on the wonderful actors (including the supporting cast of John Krasinski, Lake Bell, Mary Kay Place, and Rita Wilson) and the oft-forgotten reality that people over 25 can have great sex, and fall head over heels. --A.T. 2.0 out of 5 stars It's not complicated, 29 Dec 2010

Good points: some funny moments. Some touching moments.
Bad points: it is extremely long, and extremely plotless and extremely pointless. It is also very annoying that Streep's character has a vast multi-million dollar house, and yet she wants a huge extension built onto it. This part of the plot just seems so self-serving and narcassistic. Her children are also very annoying, with their constant hugging of each other and acting like they have just won the lottery.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ghost - but with Chocolate Croissants!, 5 Mar 2011

This is one of the hardest reviews I've had to do for a film. Just finished watching it and feel like the ending is a total anti-climax! Is it just me? I don't know - it's complicated!

The first 30 minutes of the film were quite boring. Then it did pick up and there were some very funny moments between Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep and also from Steve Martin and then it would become boring again.

I am a huge fan of Steve Martin but I felt that he was 'too reined-in' in this movie and I really hated his character and felt no empathy with him whatsoever. Steve Martin normally has oodles of charisma, but not in this film! The scene in the bakery was terrible - not sure if they were trying to re-create the pottery scene in Ghost by rolling chocolate croissants together - but anyhow it didn't work and was way too corny!

The worst part for me was the ending. It was almost an insult to older people, sending out a moralistic message saying, ok it's okay to have a mid-life crisis but let's be sensible. Let's not!

One of my favourite romantic films of all times happens to be Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro in a movie called "Falling In Love" and is about two people having an affair. Now that film is believable. It's Complicated wasn't believable - I just didn't buy into it at all. The chemistry was all wrong which is kind of sad as there were some very funny, farcical moments. I'm a bit disappointed as I normally love Nancy Meyers films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin at their best, 13 April 2010
This review is from: It's Complicated [DVD] (2009) (DVD)
I went to see this with a friend of mine. We are both suckers for Meryl Streep films. This was the funniest film I have seen in a long time. The storyline as you have already seen in other reviews is about a middle aged couple who are divorced with three grown up children. There is a wonderful chemistry between Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin and I thought the son in law was so funny I thought he stole the show at times. We laughed at this film from beginning to end and I can't wait to own the DVD. It's a film I could watch again and again. One of the funniest moments was when the Laptop was on the bed in Meryl Streep's bedroom and connected to Steve Martin at his house. It's got to be an absolute classic. If you like to laugh till you cry, this is a must see. I agree with one of the other previews Meryl Streep just gets better as she gets older.
