This is one of the hardest reviews I've had to do for a film. Just finished watching it and feel like the ending is a total anti-climax! Is it just me? I don't know - it's complicated!
The first 30 minutes of the film were quite boring. Then it did pick up and there were some very funny moments between Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep and also from Steve Martin and then it would become boring again.
I am a huge fan of Steve Martin but I felt that he was 'too reined-in' in this movie and I really hated his character and felt no empathy with him whatsoever. Steve Martin normally has oodles of charisma, but not in this film! The scene in the bakery was terrible - not sure if they were trying to re-create the pottery scene in Ghost by rolling chocolate croissants together - but anyhow it didn't work and was way too corny!
The worst part for me was the ending. It was almost an insult to older people, sending out a moralistic message saying, ok it's okay to have a mid-life crisis but let's be sensible. Let's not!
One of my favourite romantic films of all times happens to be Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro in a movie called "Falling In Love" and is about two people having an affair. Now that film is believable. It's Complicated wasn't believable - I just didn't buy into it at all. The chemistry was all wrong which is kind of sad as there were some very funny, farcical moments. I'm a bit disappointed as I normally love Nancy Meyers films.
