Product Description

Album Description

Ace Of Cups - It's Bad For You But Buy It: Big Beat’s acclaimed Nuggets From The Golden State series returns after a brief hiatus with the first-ever collection devoted to the Ace Of Cups, a name most familiar to aficionados of late 1960s San Francisco psychedelic rock, thanks to their names being emblazoned on countless Avalon and Fillmore posters. On this anthology, dating from 1967-69, we finally get to hear what this pioneering all-girl band sounded like. They never actually released any records, but the Cups were rated by no less than Jimi Hendrix. The band’s career was one of unfortunate circumstance, but the recordings that have survived display a unique combo that could sound at once punky (Stones), soulful ‘Looking For My Man’ and poetic (‘Touch Of One’ – in fact Quicksilver covered a Cups’ song on their "Shady Grove" LP). A special bonus is the inclusion of group leader Denise Kaufman’s 1966 45 as Denise & Company – a tremendous and widely regarded girl garage artefact, with only a couple of copies known to exist!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cups!, 10 July 2004
This review is from: It's Bad for You But Buy It (Audio CD)
You know when you buy an album and you kind of expect it to be pretty good but not that good! That`s how I felt when I ordered this LP knowing these recordings featured the Denise Kaufman (of Denise and co. fame) responsible for "Boy, what`ll you do then" the amazing classic girl punk gem! Well that track`s here and it sure is a killer but the rest truly holds it`s own! Like many comps it plays it`s hand a little too early. The first seven tracks simply contain some of the finest music to have emerged from SF in the late 60`s and all from previously unreleased demos no less! The opening track "Music" is truly lovely ( recorded acapella- but this ain`t no Flying Picketts trip!) For the aforementioned "Boy" words are not enough! "Glue" buy it, buy it, it`s bad for you but buy it! Sweet ballad "taste of one" Rocker "Stones" where they declare they`re in love with the Rolling Stones "cos their grass is greener!" "looking for my man" and Mongo Santamaria`s "Afro Blue". The rest is good- don`t get me wrong but I still love these the most! If you like your music raw, wild and truly evocative of another era just buy this album- Your CD player deserves it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Fulfills an empty niche for San Fran Heads, 1 Nov 2006
By Duane R. Wirdel - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: It's Bad for You But Buy It (Audio CD)
Though they were not the greatest band in the Bay area, the Aces played all over and with everyone. If you've studied the San Fran rock scene of the 60's, this cd will be welcome if only to have the opportunity to hear them. "Afro Blue" is outstanding and some of the garagey stuff is pretty good, but overall an average band.
