Product Description

The chitarrone is one of the more spectacular instruments of the early baroque. The name probably means large kithara, after the instrument played by the Classical Greek poets, and it was first developed as a bass lute to accompany singing and recitative.

Between 1604 and 1640, Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger (also known as Johann Hieronymus Kapsberger), Alessandro Piccinini and Bellerofonte Castaldi published a number of collections of chitarrone music, from which Jakob Lindberg has chosen some favourite dances, arias, toccatas and passacaglias.

Combined into seven suites, they provide rich opportunity to enjoy the particular timbre and the special playing techniques of this instrument.

Jakob Lindberg has a long-standing interest in the many varieties of lutes and has now dedicated himself to researching their relative research which informs both the performances and Lindbergs own liner notes.

Format: Audio CD
This is a wonderful disc of early baroque music for the citarrone (or theorbo) by three of its great composers and virtuosi. In the excellent notes, Lindberg gives a very interesting account of exactly which type of instrument he plays here, but as is obvious from the cover photo, it's a cousin of the lute with very long bass strings. The music is all for solo citarrone and is excellent. I was familiar with the works of Kapsberger and Piccinini and have loved them for years but the splendidly named Bellerofonte Castaldi was new to me. I am glad to say that he is just as rewarding a composer and that this is a fine, varied programme from brisk dance-like movements pieces to more meditative pieces. This music is a step away from the melancholy, modal music of the likes of Dowland and toward the textured formality of the baroque and it's a lovely, rewarding listen.

Lindberg is, as always, excellent. He has been making superb recordings for decades now and is in the very first rank of lute players. His technique is superb, giving him the freedom to give all of this music real meaning. The sound of his citarrone is simply fabulous. He says that "theorbos used today are often disappointing mini-versions of the real thing." A glance a the cover will assure you that he most certainly isn't using any such inferior instrument and the effect is really lovely. Do try to listen to this through a good stereo or decent headphones to get the full depth and resonance of the sound, which is beautifully recorded by BIS.

I recommend this disc very warmly. It's a gem.

I've heard Jakob Lindberg play the chittarone (aka theorbo) in recital, playing more or less this repertoire, and am delighted to have it on CD. He is a marvellously expressive player, and the sounds of the instrument with its deeply resonant diapasons are beautifully captured. It is a very appealing repertoire - a must for anyone interested in 16th-17th century plucked instrument music.
