Format:Audio Cassette
Since an 'advanced' language book will be used by people who have learned the basics from various sources, I was unsure of how well this particular one would pick up from where my intermediate course left me. I can now say, however, that it wasn't difficult to find my level in the style and structure of this course. The opening pages are not particularly complex, but the pace accelerates early on to a steady level of learning.
Much of the content is dialogue, and the set piece situations found at basic level, ('tourist asks directions' etc.), have given way to sophisticated discourses that can span quite a few pages. The sheer volume of these allows the grammatical points to sink in before the rules are explicitly laid out afterwards. The fact that its all on cassette makes a massive difference to confidence too.
A lot of treatment is given to idiomatic expressions, which is good. I live in Milan and so I am in a position to appreciate that what is given here is recognised and used in real life. This is the way people talk, although if learning about the past remote tense is your thing, you'll find that here too.
A lot of different things are pulled together in this, so there's something here for anyone who's hovering around the intermediate level and feels ready for the next step.

Format:Audio Cassette
If you're browsing for advanced Italian books and courses, you're probably frustrated by the scarcity of resources beyond beginner or intermediate level. I consider audio recordings absolutely vital in learning a language, and while there are many good textbooks for advanced Italian, there are rarely any that have audio cassettes to accompany them - at least not for a reasonable price. If you share this view, then this book is probably exactly what you're looking for.
This course has 8 hours of audio and a good coverage of Italian grammar - all of it (yes, subjunctive and all!) In addition, each chapter is theme-based so you are being educated about Italian life and culture at the same time (which is great for learning vocabulary). You get 4 cassettes for initial, in-depth studying, and another 4 'revision' cassettes with extra material for 'on the go' study.
In my opinion, this book is essential if you don't live in Italy and want fluency, because it's the only audio-based course that I know of for advanced Italian. And don't let the word 'advanced' put you off - no matter what the grammar topic is, it is 're-capped' from the start.
This course is a rare find, and Living Language has obviously responded to language students' needs. (In fact I was so impressed by the L.L. series that I decided to buy another one of their products - Italian Verbs Skill Builder - which equally impressed me.) After spending too much money on half-measures, I must say that this is undoubtedly the most important audio course I've ever bought since I began studying Italian. Worth every penny. It thoroughly deserves my 5 stars.

Format:Audio CD
If you are an experienced Italian speaker and feel like honing your skills don't be misled by this title. It might just qualify as 'Advanced beginners', not even 'intermediate'. Very basic grammar, dreary dialogues and a huge amount of wasted space on the CDs.
