I chose this Italian lakes guide because in the past I have always found the Lonely Planet guide excellent, using them for travelling and touring in various countries.
However this guide was a huge disappointment. Ok the print font was bigger, but that of course meant there was less in the guide overall. We were travelling using public transport and needed the formerly excellent information on accommodation and eating out in differing price ranges.It had very little to say about sites of interest. For example the sections on the duomo in both Milan and Como were very poor.
This guide just doesn't provide enough resources for an independent traveller. We got the impression that if were touring using a car and just wanted scant information on everything, then the guide would just suffice. We ended up preferring A Rough Guide which was 4 years out of date!

I have always used lonely planet guides before and find them really useful and informative, this one however is really not worth buying.
It has very generalised information about the lakes but very little specific information about places. It doesn't give good accommodation reviews and I don't like the fact the accommodation is in the back, also very few ideas for people on a budget.
Not enough pictures in the book, although the maps are good.
I would definitely shop around for a better alternative.

I would not recommend buying this guide. It has very little useful information. We bought it prior to going to the Lake Como in the hope that we could decide which location to base ourselves. After reading the section on Lake Como we were none the wiser. Some of the well known villages are not even listed and the information provided is not informative. I have since looked at the Rough Guide to the Italian Lakes and I would recommend this as an alternative. The Italian Lakes (Lonely Planet Country & Regional Guides)
