Review

A stunning new collection of guidebooks from Footprint, this series of eight volumes tackle the key regions and cities of Italy with passion, insight and style. Set out in well-organised sections, these guides include a raft of helpful information, and especially benefit from the inclusion of stand alone Popout maps of each of the areas covered. --Italia! Magazine

Product Description

This region, steep in history and charm, is one of the most photogenic areas of Italy. Milan may be the fashion capital of the world, however, the region's beauty is more than skin deep. Milan's Duomo, Castello Sforzesco and Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper are visual treats, but the city's opera and jazz scenes are renowned. Superb industrial design is intrinsic, but the cuisine has an earthiness extending from humble polenta to hearty osso bucco and to the region's understated wines and cheeses. Only a short trip from Milan; the turquoise lakes boast majestic castles and elegant villas reflected in the mirror-like surfaces, offset by the mountains where Northern Italy's adrenalin junkies and young jetsetters make the ski fields their playground. Including sections on what the locals say to help you find those lesser-known gems, a month-by-month guide to pros and cons of visiting at certain times of the year, tips on the perfect places to picnic and pick-up your goodies, plus a series of great driving routes and city walks.

Italian Lakes? 22 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
I bought this book thinking it would be useful as I am going on holiday to Cadennabia on Lake Como later in the year. The book should have been called "Milan and the Italian Lakes" as there is quite a lot of information about Milan. Unfortunately, there is only minimal information about Lake Como, not even a map although there is a plan of Como itself. Cadennabia is not mentioned at all. As I have been to a number of resorts on Lake Garda I thought I would see what the authors had to say about them. Malcesine is dismissed as being overrun by tourists and no mention is made of the cable car ride to the summit of Monte Baldo. At least there is a map of Lake Garda. Other resorts are not treated in any depth. A most disappointing book. I wish I hadn,t bought it.

Not the Guide for a Lake Como Vacation 7 Oct 2009
By F. Ribeiro - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I wanted a guide for a week stay in the Lake Como area. The Lara Dunston guide was one of three guidebooks I purchased. All three were disappointing. The coverage of these books was much much broader than I needed. This would be fine if the coverage of the Lake Como area itself was thorough and helpful. But I found the coverage of the central tourist areas of Lake Como, (Bellagio, Ravenna & Tremezzo) to be quite superficial. The lodging recommendations seemed spotty and incomplete. But I was most disappointed in the restaurant recommendations. For the most part, the named restaurants were generally mediocre. But there are excellent choices in the area and I did have some fabulous meals, but the leads came not from these guides but from TripAdvisor. And almost all of these excellent restaurants didn't earn a mention in the books. Makes one wonder what the criteria is for inclusion in these guides.
