Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Composer John Powell pays homage, on The Italian Job Soundtrack, to the remake's Eurocentrism and modern setting with a spare, twitchy main title and other cues that evoke a winning cross-pollination of the oeuvres of Thomas Newman and David Holmes. Combining organic orchestral elements with electronic flourishes to good effect, the jazz-influenced, postmodernist feel quietly propels the best moments here. The score's main shortcomings are predictable: thunderous blasts of percussion cadences and thrash guitar that have become expected contemporary action-movie clichés. Yet Powell manages to freshen even some of those with intriguing new timbres. Like the suspense-caper genre itself, it's a score where the pay-off is not nearly as interesting as the getting there. --Jerry McCulley, Amazon.com

Having recently seen The Italian Job (2003) at the cinema, one of my lasting impressions of this slightly above average heist flick was how excellent the orchestral score was. As a result I bought the album because I was keen to see if it was as special as I remembed it being. What composer John Powell has created is an intricately layered blend of strings and percussion, but there's more to it than this. It's essentially an enhanced orchestral score, and a quick scan of the credits revealed that the modifications were done by Photek, a mid nineties electro/breakbeat act probably best known for the tracks they contributed to the soundtrack of classic videogame Wipeout 2097.
Even in the cinema I knew there was something very cool about this soundtrack, and hearing it now on a decent stereo I'm really glad I took the risk of buying it. It's a great combination of both laid back and exhilerating orchestra, with Photek adding an excellent tech edge to the proceedings. Thoroughly recommended.

Short, Positive Review 21 July 2004
Format:Audio CD
This is a very well structured soundtrack, reminiscent of David Arnold's (Bond Composer) work in some parts. Full of dramatic, different, exciting and modern sounds, this is great for people looking for something refreshing.
As with most soundtracks, some tracks are very similar, especially in this one, but it's all good!

Brilliant soundtrack. Very upbeat. Excellent for slotting into the CD player in the car and chilling out whilst on a long joourney. Hip, funky and different
