For lovers of the sort of art where careful drawing is valued as a powerful means of expression or those who admire good sculpture, this is a marvellous must-have, invaluable to anyone hoping to improve their drawing ability. The excellent quality of the inumerable beautiful photos (and close up shots) offer the opportunity to closely scrutinise the subjects in the way necessary to produce really detailed drawings.
Years ago, I used to spend hours sitting on the (rather cold) floors of the V&A, making detailed drawings of the many wonderful sculptures there. Alas, with a family in tow & not living conveniently close to london, it is a long time since I have been able to do this. However, the material offered in Pope-Henessy's book will enable me to pick up where I left off & I look forward to many happy hours with my sketchbook.
The last time I borrowed 'Italian High Renaissance Sculpture' from our college library, it remained with me for a long time & I was sorry to return it. I had borrowed it in order to draw some of the subjects shown but when not distracted by the beautiful plates, found it an informative read on the subject but not at all dry or tedoius. The same is true of 'Italian High Renaissance & Baroque Sculpture'. No longer prepared to make do with a library loan that I have to keep renewing, I have ordered my own copy & look forward to receiving it soon.
