Product Description

Review

This is an interesting, well-illustrated book that looks at the familiar (10th MAS) and unfamiliar (all the rest), and gives a broader picture of the Italian Special Forces than is often the case. - historyofwar.org Fine artwork by Mark Stacey and some photographs that are considered rare illustrate the intriguing story of these elite Italian units in this 64-page paperback. --Toy Soldier & Model Figure

In summary, this is a very well written and fascinating insight into the elite units of the Italian Navy and Army Force during the Second World War and is recommended for both the general reader and the expert alike. --Miniature Wargames

Book Description

Italy's navy and air force special forces carved out a formidable reputation in World War II, earning the respect of allies and opponents alike in a host of different roles and environments, from manned torpedoes in the Mediterranean to commando-style forces in North Africa.

As an avid consumer of all the English language material I can get on Italian military history - especially 1930/40s - I enjoyed this book a great deal. The only reason it get 4 stars and not 5 is because of the constricted format of the series. While I do not consider this a serious flaw, I do always wish there were more pages! This title fits excellently with the related Osprey titles covering the Italian Army, special/political forces, armored vehicles, air force units and battleships.

For a nation that during WW2 had one of the largest navies in the the world at the time, they did more damadge and sent out more shock waves with one of their smallest naval units the soon to be fameous 10 flottiglia MAS!!.I first read about these underwater warriors as a young lad in 1973,and have been iterested in their exploits eversince. This excellent book is not big enough to cover all of the MAS history but gives you a good introduction and flavour to seek out more indepth reading on their war time past.It has good photo's,infomative text, excellent colour illustrations of men and uniforms equipment etc throughout. The book gives an outline on the different units involved such as the Gamma men,NP swimmers,MTM Ram boats, midget subs, and frogmen on their pigs!!.The rest of the book covers the Air force special forces, again an area that Italy led the world in with their ADRA units,Folgore,Nembo,Azzurro para Battalions, these like their MAS counterparts would end up in more land based operations, mainly anti partisan warfare against Tito's forces etc as well as some combatroles at Anzio agaist an ever nearer Allied force. All these units ended in the Mic mash that was the RSI era as Italy sunk into civil war from 43-45,but they paved the way for some of todays wellknown Special forces and i hope this excellent book introduces more people to that fact and a better understanding of Italys wartime role.

Another excellent Osprey book providing useful information on an aspect of the Italians armed forces in WWII that is not often covered. Well illustrated with drawings and photos, this is a highly informative book that I would heartily recommend.
