Really Unique... 11 April 2014

Really Unique...

In this 1987 Hannover recital one may immediately perceive just why Karajan advocated Weissenberg for his uncommonly distinctive keyboard talents.

For here Weissenberg's extraordinary gifts for mellifluous prestidigitation cascade like perfect strings of pearls coursing from his fingertips--; but moreover, Weissenberg definitely has already worked out in his mind the designs of the pieces so that even in the panache of his dazzling tempi he always retains a perfectly balanced contour: this is the great control of his art which is inevitably one of the highest points of praise in any true artist.

Indeed, Weissenberg's technique here approaches that of Gould, while clearly rivalling those of Pogorelič, Arrau, and Richter: no one else need apply.

Toccata, S.830, I:

05'38 Weissenberg (1987)
09'53 Gould (1957)
07'46 Pinnock (1985)

Italian Concerto, S.971:

i. 03'11 ii. 05'24 iii. 02'51 Weissenberg (1987)
i. 04'09 ii. 05'57 iii. 03'04 Gould (1959)
i. 03'51 ii. 04'30 iii. 03'50 Pinnock (1984)

well worth the high price. 6 Sept. 2006
By Peter Heddon - Published on Amazon.com
Bach on the piano doesn't get more controversial than this.....no sooner had this bracing disc appeared was it deleted under a heap of exasperated reviews.Hence it's relative rarity.

Weissenberg cultivates a bright sonority coupled with fortissimos which leave the listener shell shocked. The counterpoint tends to pile up as opposed to some careful delineation and already hectic tempos seem to accelerate beyond the realms of normal practice....all of this ought to add up to a most uncouth cocktail but the results are surprisingy spellbinding.Listen to the splendid way Weissenberg hammers out the beautiful Allemande from the 4th Partita (left hand often louder than right) and you're taken back to the world of Wanda Landowska's larger than life harpsichord playing. The final Gigue bubbles along at an exhilirating pace,an instance where Gould is way too static in comparison.Likewise, the 6th Partita forges ahead with a chaotic energy which is utterly dazzling.

Perfect antidote to more well mannered approaches to Bach and well worth the high price.

Tempo gone crazy 2 Aug. 2008
By Eduard Hanslick - Published on Amazon.com
If this is the same Weissenberg version of the Italian Concerto I heard on the radio the other day, I must say it is an unconscionable performance. Weissenberg is a highly respected pianist in many genres. What got into him here, I don't know. The beauties of Bach can only be appreciated by a listener to this performance if he knows the piece well and can complement what he actually hears with what he remembers from past hearings. I heard mostly the third movement. To say "I heard it" is an exaggeration; I noticed it, whoosh, racing past me. Someone who hears this for the first time will not realize what this composition contains. He will, however, appreciate having gotten through it quickly.
