BBC Review

College rock: A huge mainstay of US music scene and yet a concept that bewilders most of the UK, almost to the point of being an insult. Whereas we have indie guitar attitude and oodles of that unknown quantity; 'cool', the yanks get slightly funky, hooky fun that wears its three quarter-length trousers with pride.

The key word here is funk. Maroon 5 have taken 5 years capitalising on their debut, Songs About Jane, and also keeping a close weather eye on what makes middle American youth shake their collective booty. And the kids want R 'n' B. It Won't be Soon Before Long gives it to you in spades. Well done guys, this is one smart move.

It Won't! merges equal amounts of Counting Crows, Justin Timberlake and Outkast. It's an amalgamation that's taut, immediate, catchy and downright, good, clean fun. At times it approaches the condition of blue-eyed soul, though it's possibly more Black Cherry than Hall and Oates.

This is no exercise in clever post-modernism. It's a strong attempt to show you that the boys are back and ready to paaaaarty. What the lyrics lack in depth or insight the songs make up for in sheer dance- and hummability. 'If I Never Have To See Your Face Again' and 'Makes Me Wonder' are monster weapons of mass-marketing aimed at the feet and riding on swathes of string-drenched, synth-crunching disco.

There's a slight dip halfway through with 'Won't Go Home Without You' lounging in the plodding neighbourhood of Crowded House's worst moments and 'Nothing Lasts Forever' reminding one very strongly of about six other classics. But suddenly 'Can't Stop' shoves its way back into the room and it's party time again. Phew!

Maybe we're too cynical and cool about this kind of stuff. Noel Gallagher may have refused to tour with these lads, but on the strength of this, they'll be laughing all the way to the bank while he ponders on why he failed to crack America. --Jerome Blakeney

It Grew On Me 27 May 2007
By Ciaran
Format:Audio CD
My first impressions of the album were at first a little muddled. "Makes Me Wonder" and "Wake Up Call" were definitely standout tracks, but I felt other songs were lacking a memorable melody and distinction.

When I played 'It wont be soon before long" for a third time, I suddenly started to notice songs I'd sworn weren't there in the first place. "Little of your time" had Maroon 5 written all over it; packed with a spicy punch, synthesized chorus and a tinge of techo electricity.

"Kiwi" is in my opinion another awesome track. The song starts off with an element of jazzed up, light rock and then kicks in with a huge explosion of fast paced Maroon 5 rock.

With every play the album seems to gather more and more stregnth, slowly unfolding its star quality. It is clear from the distinctive instruments to the tiny touches betwixt songs that this is an album produced to a high degree of quality.

Although some fans may feel a little bit of the magic from Maroon 5's first album (the cd that brought you 'This love', 'Harder to breathe' and 'Sunday morning') is missing in the followup, 'it won't be soon before long' is still an ice-cool, primo delight. Fans of alternative, indie, rock, techno or dance music will find this album an absolute treat. Anyone who liked 'Songs about Jane' should definitely give this a try.

Even Better! 1 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
Having religiously played the previous Maroon 5 album (Songs About Jane) for weeks and weeks on end, I was a little worried that I wouldn't enjoy this album as much as the other. However, I can honestly say that I personally think that this album is multiple times better than the initial one.

There is great contrast in the types of songs on the album, a range of beats and tunes, some fast and slow but all equally as catchy and superb to listen to. It is quite utterly lyrical brilliance, Maroon 5 writes with much passion and typically it is based around the idea of different relationships.

Go out, buy it and listen yourself. . .even my dad likes it and he is very particular about his music.

Great debut album and was expecting this to be a further step for mankind!!!! But it wasnt quite all that.Read a review prior to this one and they will tell you that it is more mainstream and more poppy....Hogwash!!
There are some pretty obscure tracks that have a rocky feel to them and then others are downright weird!!
The vocals are still sublime and there are some stunning tracks, namely Wake up call and Wont go home without you.So overall still very good but not worth that elusive 5 stars.
