Product Description

Product Description

Deals with honesty - why we tell lies and how telling lies leads to trouble. The text also considers not telling the truth, the grey area of telling a white lie, coping with angry feelings when people tell lies about you and having the courage to be honest. This book is one of a series which help children to develop their own value system and make responsible decisions. Notes for parents and teachers show how ideas in the books can be used as starting points for further discussion, at home, in the classroom or in assemblies.

About the Author

Brian Moses is a poet and author of books for children. Formerly a teacher himself, he also writes resource books for teachers. When not writing at home, he travels to schools, libraries, bookshops and festivals throughout the country where he runs writing workshops and performs his poetry. I'm sad to say that my 4 year old has begun to tell small lies. For example:

Me "Have you washed your hands?"
Son " ... yes"
Me "so why is everything so dry in the bathroom?"

And more along the same lines. I wanted to nip this in the bud and talking to him about it or removing treats as punishment just wasn't working. Then I came across this book. It shows the different circumstances which lead small people (and grown-ups) to tell lies including fear of being found out when having done something wrong, bragging to impress, nastiness to exclude one friend and win over another, attempts not to hurt others' feelings. All these situations are understandable and are presented sympathetically.

The narrative then moves onto the consequences of telling lies such as the injustice of others being blamed incorrectly, shame from being found out, anger from those who have been hurt by lying, loss of trust and respect from those around you. It invites the reader to think whether they would win a prize for honesty.

It really helped my son build a healthy amount of shame for his lies and a desire to be more trustworthy in future. He absolutely hated reading it at first but his behaviour has improved immensly in a very short space of time. He has actually asked for it as a bedtime story a few times recently!

This book worked where parental talks, and behaivour modification techniques failed. Highly recommended.

I have children with ASD and one with speech, language and communication difficulties. I find it difficult to explain things to them such as lieing, telling tales, emotions, fighting, "good talking" and this book has been very bery useful. It is a simple story with great illustrations, especially the over exaggeration of the facial expressions. I have shared this book with my support group and other parents, it really has helped me.
