Product Description

CD Description

It Was This Or Football is the debut album from Manchester four piece Kid British. Produced by Stephen Street (Blur, Kaiser Chiefs) the album sees the eclectic band take inspiration from pretty much every part of the musical spectrum, successfully managing to mix jangly indie pop, grime, ska, dance and hip hop into their genre defying sound.

The album is released in two parts, with this version being the "First Half", including the singles "Elizabeth" and the Madness sampling "Our House Is Dadless".

4.0 out of 5 stars As an old mod, I was very pleased ... 31 July 2009
By M Hill
Format:Audio CD
I'm not really kid british, more like mutha british, having been around for the previous, early 80s wave of ska & skank. I have had KidBritish on my radar for a couple years and have been waiting ... and waiting... for this album to come out. The production is great and lyrically I was very, very positively surprised. Loving the tracks Cosmopolitan (reminds me of UB40) and Reactions. The bonus track is also quite clever - but I won't spoil it for you. And Dadless? As a hardcore Madness fan, I am so pleased with where KB has taken it. Well done. I'm playing it for everyone who'll stand still long enough to listen and pushing it to my all old mates in the US. Missing Lost in London, though. Is it still to come? Will I have to wait as long for the second half?

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost good enough for the cup.. 7 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Kid British? heard of them? I hadn't until early last year when the rumours of the legendary Specials doing a re-union tour started. As the time to the Specials gig at Manchester news filtered through about the warm up act, you know, the bit where everyones ears start to get used to the pounding they are going to have to endure for next couple of hours, time to go to the loo, time for another beer etc etc.
Well, Kid British were Manchesters 'easy act to follow' and so I got my first proper listen to them away from poor quality Youtube clips, they were awesome! tight playing together, good vocals and brim full of energy they were anything but an easy act to follow, luckily the Specials were dynamite as the could have been embarrassed that evening!

The album, well they missed a trick here, the disc should have been released during the tour for maximum impact and they should have released the full album rather than half of it, big groups can mess around like this, rising groups cannot.
The music is very SKA based (even using 'Our House' by Madness as a backdrop to one song) with modern rap style lyrics over some tracks that even I as a long time SKA fan can live with, very catchy sing along stuff and some nice melodies make this an upbeat happy listen.
One outstanding track Kid British have done is Lost in London, brilliant but alas missing from this 'half' of the album but hey, for the price, if you have even a half interest in SKA and young up and coming bands from Manchester then this disc is well worth adding to your collection.

Conclusion: Great tracks, great price, too little and a bit late, just like some football teams eh lads?! Kid British are in the semi's but not quite cup winners yet due to poor management I reckon.

I heard our house is dadless on the radio and bought this based on the one song... i wasn't dissapointed, love the tracks (the bonus one is great, looking forward to next years... i would agree with the kalou and malouda statement, but we'll see!)

4.0 out of 5 stars great new find 11 Aug 2009

Saw these live at Belladrum 2009, stole the show in my opinion. Excellent stuff. the album is, obviously, smoother, (i.e. produced). I prefer the live version myself, but this is a mighty fine debut.
