I ordered both Learning Language and Loving It and It Takes Two to Talk. I highly recommend both books and found them very useful. My 3 year old son's speech therapist spoke highly of the Hanen method and recommeded that I read It Takes Two to Talk. I am so glad, however, that I ordered both books because I found the more extensive discussion in Learning Language and Loving It to be very useful.

Learning Language and Loving it is directed to preschool teachers who are interested in supporting the language development of their students, while It Takes Two to Talk is focused on parents. However, Learning Language and Loving It contains most of the information included in It Takes to To Talk and much much more! An important part of learning to talk is speaking with one's peers and for speech delayed children this can be very difficult. Learning Language and Loving It gives tips on fostering peer interaction and has an extensive discussion on this topic. The book also includes information on different speaking styles of children, the stages of early speech development and how to help children best navigate through those stages. It includes useful information for more stages of speech development than It Takes Two to Talk (It takes Two focuses on the earliest stages including language discovers, early communicators, first words users, and combiners, while Learning Language expands the discussion to include early sentence users and later sentence users).

It Takes to To Talk is a great book and I recommend it. However, if you are interested in doing all you can to support the needs of a speech delayed child, I recommend that you also consider Learning Language and Loving It (another Hanen Method book).

The text book for Hanen Project 9 Nov 2006
By Anthony Perez - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is the text book for the Hanen Project. Hanen is a course that parents of speech delay children can go through to learn to speak with their children. This book is an excellent guide to understanding how to get through to your child. The methods used are simple and successful. This book is best utilized with the Hanen course, but taking the course is not necessary. The book has helped me break into my childs world and now we can play and he can say some words. I highly recommend this book if you are unable to communicate with your child.

Was not like any other book! 9 Oct 2008
By Amanda Bart - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I got tired of reading books that told me the specifics of why this was happening to my son instead of telling me how to go about fixing it. This book gives you specific ways to start your child on the path to speech when encountering delays. It doesn't tell you what synapses of the brain aren't functioning...it tells you how to engage your child to want to speak with easy daily routines. A definite awesome read for anyone who has a child with speech delay, no matter how trivial or severe.

Great resource for parents to accompany Hanen course 8 Oct 2008
By E. Kurland - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I purchased the textbook while I was taking the Hanen class offered through my county. If you can take a course in addition to reading the book that would be ideal, but its a wonderful resource on its own. The books is a quick and easy read, its not overly technical, the writing is very simplistic. There are plenty of examples of the strategies and techniques to help you figure out their key points.

On a side note, it is written with a really nice tone of empathy. It is clear that the writers realize that many of the parents who are reading this book may have kids that have a variety of issues, and that speech may not be their only area of challenge/delay but they nicely ask you to examine things you might be doing (unknowingly) to further enable/impede your child. The book is written with a VERY encouraging tone, with lots of emphasis on helping your child reach their full potential and also pointing out the importance of being realistic with your expectations, and understanding the different stages that kids have to go through to acquire better language skills. Overall a fabulous book -- its a great investment in helping your child and a fabulous course to take if you have the option available to you.
