"It runs in the family" stars Michael Douglas, Kirk Douglas, Cameron Douglas, Diana Douglas, Bernadette Peters and Rory Culkin. You may notice that there are an awful lot of Douglases in that list. Don't let that put you off because this is a teriffic, easy-to-watch film about family life. Michael Douglas plays Alex, a good looking, lawyer who works for the law firm established by his now-elderly father. He and his wife, Rebecca have two sons with a ten year age gap between them. Rory Culkin is especially good as the younger son who has a crush on an older girl. Cameron Douglas, who has never acted before, does a great job as Asher, the older son whose life is lacking any direction. This film was made after Kirk Douglas suffered from a stroke. His speech is still impaired but he has not lost his commanding on-screen presence. His former-wife plays his on-screen wife and there is a genuine tenderness between them that is almost difficult to watch. Together the family weather all sorts of every day problems, some trivial and some serious. There is an enchanting dinner-table scene where Alex's Uncle, who is suffereing from dementia, adds some atmosphere to the proceedings. I watched the extras on the DVD and it was heartwarming to hear Michael Douglas talk about this project and the love he has for his family.
