I have read a few of Sharon Owens books to date......and on the whole enjoy the storylines. This one centres on Sarah, a photographer who is on the verge of marrying her fiancee of many years in Scotland. On the eve of the wedding she overhears something which alters her plans dramatically and she flees to the West coast of Ireland. We follow Sarah's journey to the little village that she had visited as a child with her parents as she attempts to find herself again, make new friends and sort out a new future for herself.
My problem with Sharon Owens story telling is.... you never have to wonder how the next step will be reached, because its just given to you on a plate with no build up at all. Sarah, having fled Scotland and deciding on the spur of the moment to go the village of Redstone near Galway is walking along the street in Dublin where she passes an estate agent's window where lo and behold .. a picture perfect cottage is advertised for rent in the very village she is intending to travel to !! I found myself saying PUH... LEASE !!!
Her best friend Abigail is left to break the news to Sarah's fiancee in Scotland that she has fled from the house in the night. The moment that we are made aware that not only has MacKenzie.. the now jilted fiancee lost a wife to a car accident some years ago, but that Abigail lost the love of her life in a motor cycle accident... well......need I go on !! Rocket science was not needed at this point.
Having said that....... I loved the characters in Redstone that Sarah befriends, especially Aurora who runs a book club !! I loved the cottage she hired and I especially loved the sea.... you could almost feel the breeze off the waves as they all headed out on their morning walks.
As I said.. a nice gentle story with good characters........but don't expect the clues to be cryptic as to how the plot unfolds... its kind of handed to you on a plate without much deduction needed at all !
