Book Description

14 Sep 2006
The legendary band leader and jazz trumpeter, broadcaster and humorist looks back at his extraordinarily rich and varied life and the many colourful characters he has known and played with - from Duke Ellington to Louis Armstrong. He also recalls his early life as the son of a famous housemaster at Eton, where he was educated. During the war, he served in the Grenadier Guards and, on demobilisation, studied for two years at Camberwell Arts School. In 1949 he joined the 'Daily Mail' as cartoonist, wrote the story-line for Trog's 'Flook' cartoon, and also signed a recording contract with EMI. He had the first British jazz record to get into the Top Twenty in 1956 with 'Bad Penny Blues'. The book will appear to his large cult following, both from his regular live appearances with his band, as the irrepressible chairman of BBC Radio 4's popular nonsense quiz 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue' and as the presenter of 'The Best of Jazz' since 1967. He lives in Hertfordshire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ce mossieu qui parle........... 2 Feb 2009
Format:Hardcover
Slight, light but great fun. It is worth the money for the story of Bruce Turner's last communication with Humph, alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars An amusing, rambling collection of anecdotes 18 Aug 2014
By Mark Pack TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This slim volume - under 200 pages of generously sized and spaced text - is one long rambling succession of anecdotes. Funny, charming, occasionally enlightening but best read in short bites of entertainment.

There is in it much more about jazz than I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, yet despite me being a great fan of the latter and mostly uninterested in the former (unless it is being performed by one of my nephews) I still found it a fun read. Plus there's a great scrambled eggs recipe.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed! 28 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Very disappointed when I received this item, didn't realize it was second hand, corners turned down and notes scribbled in it!! Bought it as a Christmas present for someone, so had to put it straight in the bin! Waste of money, time and effort.
