Product Description

"...one of our finest singers, regardless of category," Clive Davis, Sunday Times On her new album Jacqui presents a selection of lush, atmospheric orchestral arrangements in collaboration with (and lovingly dedicated to) her father, the late Sir John Dankworth. In addition to standards such as A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square and Blame It On My Youth, the album contains some wonderful original material in the form of the hauntingly beautiful title track (music by John Dankworth, lyrics by Buddy Kaye), and The Man, a father and daughter co-write. Full press and promotion accompanies this release. Advertising in all Jazz magazines. Now regarded as one of the country's premier jazz voices, Jacqui's early work caught the ear of Sir Michael Parkinson and national acclaim soon followed. Subsequent releases, both under her own name and with artists like the Brodsky Quartet, Courtney Pine, Tim Garland and many others, firmly secured her place at the forefront of the UK music scene. Musician and songwriter Rod Argent says in his liner notes for the album that Jacqui's "is a voice made to sing standards...clear as a bell, with wonderful intonation." Recalling a time when Jacqui sang with her father at a local concert, Argent writes that "his beautifully structured arrangement allied to Jacqui's wonderfully moving and incisive voice had an effect on me which I'll never forget." Johnny Dankworth was perhaps the UK's best known and best loved jazz musician. His death, at the age of 82 in February 2010, was a huge blow to music lovers both at home and abroad. As well as being an iconic, world-renowned composer and arranger, he was also a prolific performer who played on hundreds of recordings throughout the course of his long and distinguished career. In an entirely unplanned but magically appropriate turn of fate, the alto sax solo from an instrumental version of The Man which John had recorded several years earlier fitted the key and tempo of Jacqui's recent studio recording perfectly, without the benefit of a click track, pitch shifting, or any other technological trickery. So this album also constitutes Sir John Dankworth's last performance on record – a fact that would have surprised even John himself! Track listing: A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square / In The Still Of The Night / It Happens Quietly / I'm Glad There Is You / A Love Like Ours / My Foolish Heart / Make Someone Happy / Blame It On My Youth / Ill Wind / At Last / The Man / The Folks Who Live On The Hill.

This album is truly one of the finest and most beautiful pieces of work I've ever set my ears on.
Could the album have a more apt title? "It Happens Quietly" is an exact reflection of the power Jacqui Dankworth's voice and style- not overplayed or overdone, but beautifully and calmly executing each number with crisp, emotive perfection and gorgeously exposed and humane resonance.

It's been a long time coming, but Dankworth teams up with her father on this album- and the effect is brilliant because his style and class through each track's arrangement is impenetrable; and the combination between his wonderful musicianship and her fabulous vocal abilities make a perfect match.

This collection of songs is a romantic collection of superb calmness and epic gentleness- this album beautifully lilts along with excellent sensuality, and a particular favourite of mine is the track "In The Still Of The Night"- with Latin inspired drums tingling the melody of a flowing guitar riff- it is to die for! Her reinterpretation of "Blame It On My Youth" is wonderful- stripped back and delicate and wonderful- I adore it.

I hugely recommend this album- its of exceptional quality; wonderful musicianship, fabulous vocals and great arrangements- it really is one of the most outstanding albums of the year!

Jacqui Dankworth is the daughter of Johnny Dankworth and Cleo Laine and without too much fuss (given her lineage) she's now regarded as one of the UK's premier jazz voices and this new 12 tracker won't do that reputation any harm at all.
Jacqui has made the aptly-titled album as homage to her father.
He died in February 2010, but despite his failing health he worked on the arrangements and contributed two songs - the haunting title cut and 'The Man'. For the latter, producer Tony Platt inserted a sax solo which John had recorded some years ago and it perfectly matches the key and tempo Jacqui uses on the song.
In essence, it's Sir John's last performance on record.
Though 'The Man' and 'It Happens Quietly' are "new" songs they dovetail beautifully with the rest of the material - standards all.
Jacqui eschews all flamboyance and allows her purity of tone to underline the classic beauty of material like 'A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square', 'At Last', 'I'm Glad There's You' and 'The Folks who Live On The Hill'.
Throughout she's supported by some stellar performances - notably from her bassist brother, Alec, and sax man Tim Garland.
The live strings (contracted by Sally Herbert) add just the right amount of elegance and refinement and the package is completed with some touching, personal notes from Rod Argent.
It's clear that the Dankworth dynasty is entering a new phase. B. Buckley

Jacqui Dankworth has matured into a great singer.
Pefect pitch, articulation , and soul- pleasure to hear these songs sung with such sensitivity - every word phrased perfectly. Surrounded by a bunch of UK's best jazz musicians - you should not fail to like this one.....

When I first listened to this album, I forced myself not to compare Jacqui to her Mum Cleo Laine. Am I glad I did. This is a real artist in her own right. Ok, she's fortunate in having genes from Mum and Dad (Johnny Dankworth) but that does not detract from the excellence of her performance here.

It Happens Quietly is a real class album with tracks so expressive, one wonders how the artist can find the depth of feeling to make such recordings within the confines of a recording studio.

This will make a great addition to anyone's album collection (and not just jazz aficionados). Wonderful for a late night/after dinner relaxation.

Considering that I'm not normally into vocalists, the purity of Jacqui Dankworth's delivery makes this one of my all-time favourite albums.

This is both beautiful and touching in that it was the last effort of Jacqui's late father Sir John to arrange a lasting forum to both him and his daughter...both accomplished remarkably. Jacqui's voice is smoky and seductive and is a lovely result in this, as if she knew this was a swan song for her Dad...perhaps she did, but I prefer to think it was just two wonderful talents, great genes, and love of music that created this...add it to your collection--you'll feel the same way, I'm sure.

This is just a superb album. You will never hear a better version of the opening track. Her tone, diction, perfect pitch are a delight. She manages to convey such ease with every song and equally, creates a feeling of intimacy almost as if you are in the studio. You cannot produce an album of such quality without the support of such great musicians and they more than play their part (no pun intended!). This is just a great album and is worth every penny. Enjoy!!

My husband and I are big fans of Jacqui Dankworth and have been to her concerts in the past. This CD is a lovely collection of mellow "chill out" tracks. Great for a Friday night at home winding down after a hard week's work.
Arrived in good time. Well packaged and as described by the seler, thanks
