Product Description

* 26 rockin' instrumentals from the studio that created the Chantays' `Pipeline' and the Rumblers' `Boss'.

* This compilation ties together all the surf and rocking instrumentals recorded at the Downey Studios or for Downey Records in the early 60s. Most were released on small indie boutique labels, if not on the Downey imprint itself.

* There are some previously unreleased items, and a few that were initially unearthed for a now-deleted, badly mastered and totally un-annotated Dunhill CD in the 80s. With this release we have tried to include as much information as possible in Brian Nevill's exhaustive sleeve notes together with some great photos for the booklet.

* This is a must for surf and instrumental fans who like to have one studio, one label, one legend in one place. For everyone else, we've got alternate takes and unavailable masters, so there's no excuse for this not to be on your shelf.

This is a terrific compilation of 26 tunes by bands I had never heard of before and the through notes contained in the CD are informative and unlike some CD's are 20 pages long.

From the opening bars of The Rumblers "Surf Rat" to the final track, The Revels "Church Key" the smile won't leave your face if you are a fan of 60's drag and surf instrumentals.

A great package , typical of Ace Records impeccable standards.

The "experts" i e the Rock Critics insisted that the British Invasion had seen off surf music but this is not quite right.
Surf revival apart it never really died as a valid form of American pop music-after all Wipeout charted again in the mid 60s and the hundreds of goups playing surf music had ever changing lineups as this CD shows.
It concentrates on the Downey label and its offshoots and is the 4th in the series.
Surf and hotrod music was probably the first real garage music

It could only happen in America 25 July 2012

First off the other review on here is so utterly stupid that I wonder if this is a newbie to instrumental collecting. If so then the Downey collections are not the place to start-this is the advanced end of instro.
As the U K Ace label spend a lotta time on these the results are well worth what to the collector is a Holy Grail but as specialist material the Ace collections make little money.Which is not the name of the game anyway. The game is total musical failure which is very nice for the collector but no so for the artists who just tried to clutch the brass ring.Few of Downey's instumentals charted and few were ever made available in the U K

Excellent and recommended! 16 Oct. 2013

If you're interested only in having a "surf's greatest hits" in your collection something like the Rhino box should suffice.
If you'd like to explore the genre and learn a little more the Ace or Sundazed compilations are a great place to start.

A good selection of graet surf and hotrod sinstrumentals. 23 April 2014

I chose this Cd because of the large number of tunes on it by some really good bands and ones that are not easily found. it is one to pick p for some of those harder to find groups and songs.

Ranging from uninspired to incompetent 3 April 2010
By Latin Student - Published on Amazon.com

No hidden gems here - the comparison to a Rhino collection is laughable. I love this kind of music, and I could barely get through the whole CD. Not worth the listening time, let alone the price. Many songs are very poorly mixed, and most seem like warm-ups or discard takes. Too bad the title is the best part of the package.
