Product Description

Album Description

* Ace Records releases the third volume exploiting the fascinatingly quirky Downey Records catalogue.

* While the much-lauded first compilation was an instrumental collection, "Intoxica!" (CDCHD 1114), and the second was a rock`n'roll collection that spanned the pre-Beatle era ("It Came From The Suburbs" CDCHD 1133), this collection brings us gems from Southern California's suburban garage-land.

* All great garage-punkers and psychedelic whimsical delights of a jangly mixed-up nature! This is essentially a re-issue of a long-deleted and much-missed comp called "Scarey Business" (CDWIKD 205), which was released and then withdrawn in 2001. That collection had 13 Downey gems pulled from the tape vaults by Ace's Alec Palao, mixed with tracks from two other labels. This new compilation re-introduces all those Downey cuts plus another nine from the same source, including many unreleased tracks.

* Would you believe Barry White (yes, that BW) producing the Rumblers?

In 1963 one of the big Transatlantic instrumental hits was Pipeline by the Chantays but it was to remain the only Top 10 hit for the Downey label who also scored in the States with the Rumblers.A year ealier they'd recorded the house band the Pastel 6 who jumped ship for the Zen label where they had their only hit so it was back to the drawing board

The somewhat chaotic and shambling attitude of the label would mean it was a case of throwing mud at the wall but very little would stick.

In less than a year after Pipeline the Beatles would change everything and garage bands became the norm as 1000s of makeshift bands tried to copy the new English sounds.

While the contents of this collection concentrates more on white rock'n'roll which ignored Tin Pan Alley's attempts to sanitize it-unlike the previous collection It Came from the suburbs which is mainly of black artists in the mould of uptown R & B of 1962- its interesting at least to realise that for a time there was a sub genre known as Garage which was to lead into punk over a decade later.

Here its just the idea that American groups began in the garage whether playing surf or British Beat.

In the scheme of things the Downey label is well down the scale but an interesting curiosity nevertheless.

The booklets are always an interesting read-so much that might have been but lack of airplay and lack of any artist having the visionary touch of the Beatles contributed to the eventual demise of the label who don't seem to have made any attempts to create their own version of the Beatles
