The plot rattles along . . . the metaphors are quite inspired (STARBURST)

Ingenious, energetic and good-humoured (DAILY TELEGRAPH)

Filled with puns, absurd situations, clever literary asides and outright farce (Science Fiction Chronicle)

Funny, frivolous, fun. LEON VINCENT

Look, yea and forsooth, there indeed was exceedingly a lot of hype over "It Came From on High." It was plastered and pasted all over his miscellaneous novels, cod blurbs and advertisements:"Andrew Harman's new dazzling comic fantasy" or some such. What is it with publishers, endorsing and stuff that scintillates, eh? There is always something akin to this..."A sparkling novel of (interject Pratchettian humour) Luv an Hatte inne A Worlde Gone Madde"...blah-blah-bling-blah. It's as if the publisher is advertising some kind of white wine, for Pete's sakes--whoever Pete is, er... Yes, I've only read Andrew Harman's "The Sorceror's Appendix", "The Frogs of War", "101 Damnations" (see my review of it), "A Midsummer Night's Gene" and this, but, well, it didn't too particularly too much for me. There was quite an excess of in-jokes, and little quirky continuances of witticisms. There was a science-fiction-fantasy plot line; tiny Pratchettesque characters and even references to puffins! But it still wasn't grand. It dealt with human nature in a satirical manner, and what theology and religion and damned coincidence bloody well pops up on you, and Pope Joshua Angeles had a certain naiive resemblance to Pratchett's Archchancellor Ridcully of Discworld, but "It Came From on High" was a vague disappointment. The jokes are good--well, reasonably, think of Tom Holt and Piers Anthony sitting around a table, shouting at each other--and the plot is more twisted than an alcoholic corkscrew yet very intelligent, but it's like Harman's previously written-of lemmings. The book tries to overcome a very big metaphorical cliff, and falls flat on its face. Read it, but it's a bit of an anticlimax really.

This book was much more enjoyable than Andrew Harman's previous efforts. It was fast paced and full of puns, you really need to read it twice to appreciate all those in-jokes again. The finale had a reasonable twist, though I would have preferred the final events to have been an intergalactic destruction derby. Good diversion for PTerry fans who are craving a fix before the next discworld novel.
