The fifth series of this excellent classic BBC series marks a sad time in its' history. Michael Bates who brilliantly played Bearer Rangi Ram was by now suffering from terminal cancer but despite this and being in a lot of discomfort, bravely struggled on to complete this series.

As with that other classic Perry and Croft comedy series, Dad's Army when it lost the equally great James Beck who played Private Walker until his untimely death, "It ain't half hot mum" was never quite the same following this loss. Having said that, it continued to be a great series for its' remaining years due in no small part to the fine ensemble of actors and of course the brilliant writing.

I would recommend this series to anyone who appreciates the very best in British comedy and I stick two fingers up to the 'PC' brigade who would no doubt frown upon its' subject matter.

Series 6 is available now, series 7 is due out soon. Let's hope the 8th and final series is released before long too.

I bought this recently and watched all of the episodes over the course of a couple of weeks; they were fantastic. I remember watching some of them as a child and the lovely Indian sounding comic songs are still a joy to listen to. This is gentle British humour. It centres on the British army in India at the end of the second world war. The story revolves around the armies entertainment troupe. The troupe dress up as women often; the troops they entertain have not seen women in ages and it is considered it would cheer them up to see pretty women on stage. The series is extremely witty, and the Indian bearer character really makes the series; he talks of his fellow Indians as being 'damn natives' and he as being 'we British'. However, the humour is probably a little racially naive for today's more enlightened audience. The sergeant 'shut up' constantly insults all of the troupe, in his efforts to make soldiers out of them and get them posted 'up the jungle' and the officers must constantly defend the entertainment troupe.

Series five of this great series is as superb as the first four series were. Unfortunately Michael Bates died after the fifth series and the last three series aren't as good without him. You might, therefore hestitate to buy the last three series, but DO NOT hesitate to buy this great fifth series. For any fan of British Comedy, this DVD is a must have!

The fifth series of It Ain't Half Hot Mum sees the concert party posted up the jungle where they have to perform for the soldiers near the front line. This also happens to be the last series to feature Michael Bates as Bearer Rangi Ram who passed away not long after the fifth series was completed.

While the change in location does have a slight effect on the show it does help to show the concert party more venerable than ever, particularly Bombardier Beaumont who really starts to loose his mind in the jungle.

I purchased this as a present for my 33 year old son-in-law who loves it.
His family enjoyed the programme when it was a television series.

As this series is unlikely to be repeated on TV due the debatable PC rules today, it was good to be able to still obtain this DVD
and enjoy the comedy of a past era that stands the test of time.

If you like any of Davis Croft's sitcoms, this is a worthwhile addition to your collection.

Good family viewing with no bad language and inappropriate images.

I enjoyed watching it again.
