Issued in 1999 under the title 'It's Harder Now', this is a remixed version of a very fine record indeed which begs a few questions. First of all: why the remix? There were a few comments about the production values on the original release but, like Sly said, that was just a case of 'different strokes for different folks' & nothing that the amazing Mr. Pickett's vocal performances could not tower above. And let's face it, the man himself is in top form throughout. Indeed, there's an astonishing moment in the sublime 'Outskirts Of Town' where his voice performs a seemingly effortless trill through a whole octave which gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Second: why the change of title? Was this a matter of prudence by someone who considered 'It's Harder Now' a little too suggestive for comfort? Well, so what if it was? Never let an innuendo pass you by without notice, I say. Thirdly, the running order has been completely changed for no apparent reason. Finally, we are missing a track here with 'What's Under That Skirt?' gone AWOL. Another case of prudence? Okay, so it was not the best track but leaving it off smacks of censorship given its explicit sexual message. These quibbles aside, this album is highly recommended to anyone who loves soul music because Pickett delivers some remarkable vocals which amply demonstrate his greatness. Both the old & new title tracks are superb but the quality doesn't dip elsewhere either. Pride of place, however, goes to 'Outskirts Of Town' which is not only one of the Wicked Pickett's greatest recordings but well on its way to being considered one of the most essential soul tracks ever recorded (in my humble view!). It's worth investigating the album for this track alone, which really is that good, & then everything else will come as a pleasurable bonus. The cover says 'Essential Recordings' & yes, it's true. This is a record which belongs in any true soul fan's collection. Flawed, maybe, but simultaneously brilliant!
