Review

The grand master of the deep-water thriller (Medusa, 1988, etc.) sails to coldest Chile, Tierra del Fuego, and antarctic points beyond to pick at the old sores and hidden horrors of Argentina's shameful politics. The job prospects for youngish Peter Kettil are not good. Declared redundant by the conglomerate that has bought out the ancient East Anglian firm for which he worked, Kettil, a fine sailor and an expert in the arcana of wood preservation, sees nothing for it but to become a consultant. His very first job is a doozy: He's summoned to the naval museum at Greenwich to meet with glamorous South American widow Iris Sunderby and Iain Ward, a blustering Scotsman who wants to apply his recent wealth to the search for an icebound 19th-century sailing ship discovered in Antarctica by the late Mr. Sunderby. The museum would like Peter's opinion on the ship's condition. Peter hires on, but the apparent murder of beautiful Iris by her hot headed "cousin," an Argentine student adrift in London, seems to doom the expedition. Mr. Ward, however, insists that Peter accompany him to Peru, where, after a hair-raising trek through the coastal desert and the maritime Andes, they find Mrs. Sunderby alive and in the clutches of a villain who has been enjoying her drugged favors and who may be her brother. Once rescued, Iris is still eager to fit out the motor sailboat for which the increasingly mysterious Mr. Ward has plunked down cash. The search will be anything but straightforward. The murderous student from London is not only in town but is eager to sign on the crew. And he and Iris are terribly interested in the kidnapper from Peru who has decamped to the Straits of Magellan, where he too plans to join the search. Located after some rather heroic seamanship, the mystery ship yields up its dreadful secrets and Iris's family tree is untangled. A sensational cruise. Innes knows sailing as well as anybody writing and manages to make being soaked and frozen in the Straits of Magellan attractive. The mystery is clever, too, though off-putting. Product Description

Isvik's mission is to investigate the sinister findings of a glaciologist. Is there a "Ghost Ship" trapped in the Antacrtic ice? This novel is a study in the horrendous face of evil that takes the reader down into the Southern ice. The author also wrote "The Lonely Skier" and "The White South". --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Gripping Adventure 21 Dec 2011
By Hobnob
Format:Paperback
This story had me gripped very early on. Hammond Innes used his literary powers and imagination to keep me spell-bound throughout the story. It was sometimes quite obvious who were the real 'Goodies and Baddies) but there were twists that sometinmes stunned me. Perhaps my review would have been different if I had read the 'real book' rather than the unabridged version narrated on CD disc. I would like to build a collection of Innes' books on my Kindle but am limited in choice. As my library service has only a few of Innes' works in audio book format, I shall endeavour to be patient until the publishers release more for inclusion in the Kindle store.

Easy Reading 22 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
I have most of Innes books in my collection. This one was easy reading and you didn't have to think to hard as you could see where it was drifting with ease. The disappointment as with most of his stories was the abrupt ending with unaswered questions. What happened to the after affects of the drugging? Who was Iain and why was he committing money to the venture as he came accross as someone who did not part with his money without good reason. Why did he fly off in the RAF helicopter at the end with no explanation? Was he there due to a contact he had made at Eton and was helping out MI6? What did the two of them decide to do after he left and they had a free boat?

This is the first book I have read by this successful author. I would like to think I would pick up others in the future, but for this first one I'm afraid I was very disappointed with it. The opening chapters set the scene in terms of plot. Thereafter, the connections between characters seemed contrived, the story took ages to gather any momentum (seeming to spend unnecessary pages delving into the nature of the characters which didn't add much to developing the plot) and only reached any meaningful corner a handful of pages from the end. I won't spoil the story or what happens at the end of it for future readers, but for me it just didn't seem plausible. Perhaps others might think differently.
