France released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Mono ), French ( Mono ), English ( Subtitles ), French ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: 2-DVD Set, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Using interviews and other footage shot especially for this documentary, French director Claude Lanzmann investigates the state of Israel in 1972. This movie concentrates on Israelis going about their business of everyday living. One interview shows the reactions of a concentration camp survivor, now a police chief, to being called a 'Nazi' by demonstrators. Another segment follows the experiences of a Russian Jewish immigrant, beginning with his first visit to the Wailing Wall and continuing to his disturbing perception that he is welcomed more by virtue of his being Russian than for the fact that he is Jewish. ...Why Israel? Fascinating look at Israel in the early 70s. 25 Jun 2008
By Jlem - Published on Amazon.com
Pourquoi Israel (Israel, Why) (1973) is Shoah filmmaker Claude Lanzmann's first film. The documentary examines life in Israel twenty-five years after becoming a state. Lanzmann spends time with, among others, German-Jewish émigrés, intellectuals, prison inmates, dock workers, and the newly arrived. The title of the film is often incorrectly given as a question "Israel, Why?" however, Lanzmann intended it as an answer or an explanation from a collection of viewpoints. The film premiered in Israel just three days after the Yom Kippur War. Highly recommended.
