The Music of John Carisi 30 Mar 2014
By Scott - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Previously, I'd only known John Carisi as the composer of the tune "Israel," which is a high point of both Miles Davis' "Birth of the Cool" and Bill Evans' "Explorations." This recent Fresh Sounds release gives much fuller picture of Carisi as a composer, arranger, band leader, and trumpet player, and the album is consistently good, from beginning to end. For me, the best parts of the album are the opening cuts, which feature Carisi leading a larger ensemble that is somewhat like the "Birth of the Cool" band in both its instrumentation and overall effect. It's likely that fans of "Birth of the Cool," or of other large-ensemble albums like Gigi Gryce's beautiful "Nica's Tempo" will admire these tracks as well. This is a beautiful album, and is well worth seeking out.
