Reviews

An experiment in bovine genetic modification goes horrifically wrong in writer/director Billy O'Brien's debut feature. John Lynch stars as Dan, a cattle farmer in the remote Irish countryside, whose ex, Orla (Essie Davis), a veterinarian, has convinced him to take part in a profit-driven experiment on his cows, run by John (Marcel Iures), an officious scientist who seems very concerned with maintaining secrecy. Orla is conducting a routine check on a pregnant cow, and her hand is inside the animal, checking the unborn calf, when something bites at her. John is called to the farm, and reassures them that the safety checks were all okay. He's more concerned with the presence of a caravan just outside the farm occupied by Jamie (Sean Harris) and Mary (Ruth Negga), a desperate young couple who are apparently hiding out from something.

An unremittingly bleak film set on a rural Irish farm where a financially desperate farmer has allowed a biogenetic research firm to conduct experiments upon his pregnant cattle with devastating results.
This film is part 'meddling with nature' and part exploration of the darker side of human nature. The acting and direction are to a very high standard; all the relationships and characters within the film hinge on either desperation or are troubled in other ways which adds an edge to the film and increases the tension for the viewer.
A very solid horror in my opinion, the budget is unimportant when the characters, story and direction are as good as this and the director/writer deserves a lot of credit for having the foresight and, lets face it, courage to present such a novel potentially disasterous idea in such an accomplished way. We need more homegrown horrors like this from the UK and Ireland, very recommended.

'Isolation' is a great title for this film. Not only is the location bleak and beautifully filmed to convey a sense of dread and fear but the small cast of characters all feel like they are running from or have run from something and all convey a sense of loneliness and 'Isolation'

I will not dwell on plot because others have already done that.I will just say that the makers of the film have have come up with a slightly different spin on your normal horror film. The fact that it has a basis in reality, being about 'Unscrupulous Genetic Research' adds to the feel because you just know that one day something like this might actually happen.

Extremely well acted (Special mention must go to John Lynch 'The Farmer' who , whilst not having lots of dialogue, still manages to put in a fabulous performance), great effects (No Digital) and fantastic Camera Work which captures a different side to Ireland rather than the twee cottage scenario that is normally portrayed in films/tv.

Put all of this together and you have one of the best low budget, independent films to come out of this country for a long while.

Extras are Cast Interviews (not overlong but interesting), Short feature on design and effects and Trailer.

I am a fan of commentaries so was a little disappointed that there wasn't one but overall it does not detract from this great film. Very Highly Recommended.

Right from the early, traumatic birthing scene it's clear this is going to be a very visceral movie. You need wellies just to watch. And, despite this Alien lookalike's tiny budget, this is a surprisingly effective horror film. Set entirely on the farm of a penniless farmer (played with typical gauntness by John Lynch) a deeply claustrophobic grimness pervades throughout. The tension never lets up and the only thing that might have improved this film would have been enough cash to create a decent CGI creature. In fairness though, the animatronics are used to the best possible effect. However, it's the well-maintained sense of menace that is the primary force behind the film's success.

When you first read about genetic modifications of a cow you have this idea of a really low budget B movie with folks who can't act. This is most definitely not the case. If you like gore fests then this film may dissappoint if you like atmosphere and tension then you'll love it.

It has been filmed very much in the style of Alien and it uses non american actors, need I say more!

I've watched many so called scary movies but this is the first in a long time that has had me glued to my seat and feeling the tension.

If my title hasn't put you off your takeaway Big Mac, then this unusual, modest, Irish set little horror flick from Billy O'Brien could well stir up your stagnant horror viewing.

Fed up with mutant zombies aimlessly running around or silly, annoying students driving nowhere on a moonlit night, with loud judders all but making up for genuine scares?

I'm not saying that Isolation will be the scariest thing you'll ever see but as it turns into 'Alien' territory, with dark, claustrophobic (& strangely familiar and homely) farm buildings and milking sheds becoming the space craft in that movie, it has its moments of being not very pleasant. At all, as the (whatever it is) wants to find a host in the farm-working humans in the story (all fair/good performances, from relative unknowns).

The basic premise is a fairly sound and pertinent one, an unofficial and one-man breeding campaign for improving his herd's growing and milking capabilities result in a calf being still-born....

Yes, it's a bit too long as it takes a long-winded approach to get on track, The Archers' approach seems naively quaint at times but the gore - as we 'know' its source - always seems real.

Isolation has quite a low IMDb score yet some TV listings reviews rate it highly. I'm going for a safer middle ground - if you want a different horror flick to rent or download tonight, (or see it on Film 4, as I did) then it's well worth trying out. Just be careful what you're eating!

This low budget British Horro is a real treat. The acting is superb and the direction and camera work is first class.

The level of suspence that is built up is wonderful and there are one or two real moments that make you jump.

A touch on the gorey side but not too much as to be silly.

This is another example of the first class horror that has been produced in the country on a low budget in recent years.

I think this film could become a bit of a cult classic
