Product Description

In the final part of the Swallowcliffe Hall trilogy, Isobel comes to the shell of this once-beautiful house with her gas mask in 1939, to stay with her grandmother Polly. Talk of war is on everyone's lips and it's an anxious time - especially for Andreas, a boy who has escaped from Germany on the Kindertransporte: the evacuation of thousands of Jewish children to safety in Britain. Can Izzie help his family find sanctuary at the Hall too? She is determined to try, although the house has fallen on hard times and its very existence is threatened. In the process, she uncovers a family secret that has remained hidden for years, and discovers courage in the face of danger and prejudice she never knew she had.

'"What happens when these refugees grow up?" asked the man from London in his reasonable voice. "They might be innocent little children now but they won't stay that way for ever."
"When it's safe, they'll go home to their families." I had to make one last appeal. "We might not be able to stop the war but this is one good thing that at least we can do. I know it's what my grandmother would have wanted, and no one could have loved Swallowcliffe more than she did."'

Really enjoyed this 9 Feb 2012

I read this book first not realising it was the last book in a trilogy. Loved it though and since reading this i have read the 1st book and about to start on the 2nd one!!
Really enjoyed being taken back in time to life before WW2. Having watched and being a huge Downton Abbey fan i could relate to alot in the tv series from these books but if you have not watched Downton Abbey then it's not vital at all.

Such a moving story 20 Sep 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a great read. It's the last instalment in the 'Swalliowcliffe Hall' trilogy, and resolves secrets and mysteries from the first two books in a wonderfully satisfying way. Polly Perkins' granddaughter, Isobel, arrives at Swallowcliffe Hall in 1939 to convalesce after an illness and help her granny, who's become housekeeper there. The house has fallen on hard times, and I loved reading about how it has changed, and picking up on references from the first two stories. Isobel meets Andreas, a Jewish boy who has escaped from journey by means of the Kindertransport, and tries to help his family in the face of prejudice and mistrust on the village. The relationship between this sensitive girl and her grandmother is delightfully written and I was in tears by the end! So interesting to read about the period just before the Second World War was declared.

A wonderfully moving story 20 Sep 2011

This is such a great ending to the 'Swallowcliffe Hall' trilogy. It's the story of Isobel, Polly Perkins' granddaughter, who arrives at the Hall in 1939 to convalesce after an illness and help her granny, who's become housekeeper there. I loved reading about changes to the house, which has fallen on hard times, and picking up on references to people and places from the first two stories, and the relationships between Isobel, her mother and her grandmother are beautifully portrayed. Isobel meets Andreas in the village, a Jewish boy who's escaped from Germany by means of the Kindertransport, and tries to help his family in the face of prejudice and mistrust in the village. There are lots of fascinating insights into life just before World War Two in a beautiful but crumbling old English country house, and all the secrets from the first two books are resolved in a very satisfying way. I was in tears by the end!

Isobel's Story 6 Mar 2012

Isobel's Story was a wonderful ending to the series of three books. Polly's Story and Grace's Story were wonderful glimses into the world of 'below stairs' and how 'upstairs' had an effect on the outcome of their lives.
