The Little Flames have previously released two singles 'Put Your Dukes Up, John' and 'Goodbye Little Rose' and appear to have been around since 2004. Since then they've supported the Coral and played at a Japanese festival, as well as recording their debut LP in Sweden with the producer of Franz Ferdinand's debut. In the interim they have also been covered by the Arctic Monkeys on their 'Leave Before the Lights Come On' single, 'Put Your Dukes Up, John' the highlight of that release - recorded in a very close way to the original (maybe those Monkeys got the chanting thing on 'Fake Tales on San Francisco' from 'Dukes'?).

The Little Flames are set to support the Arctic Monkeys on their spring tour, so with that exposure and this single, it's likely they'll be finding an audience (something not very apparent at their gig in Wolverhampton the other night!). 'Isobella' is a tight angular slice of indie rock and a great song to return with - their live incarnation is wild, reminding me of bands like The Au Pairs, The Banshees and the Raincoats, as well as the better side of Echobelly and folk like Love/The Coral/Beeefheart/Zutons. 'Isobella' bodes well for their debut album, likely to be a highlight of 2007. A great comeback single then...

The Little Flames' "Put Your Dukes Up John" was a knock-out blast of punk-pop energy that deserved a much wider audience. Sounding as if it had been recorded in a late 70s Hamburg basement by a group of teenagers fed on a diet of Kleenex/Liliput and the Au Pairs, it could easily been one of those classic 7" nuggets put out by Rough Trade c 1979.

Unfortunately "Isobella", while it is catchy and chugs along nicely enough, has had the raw edge and agitpop, which was what gave the Little Flames something a bit special, completely airbrushed out of it and ends up like a late Sleeper b-side.
