Biography

Delirious yet sophisticated, lush yet furious, sarcastic yet sentimental, Flat Earth Society are one of the most exciting big bands around.

Flat Earth Society (sometimes simply known as "FES") is the brainchild of mercurial Belgian composer & clarinet player Peter Vermeersch, and consists of about 14 top-class turbulent and skilled musicians.

I bought this album after it being mentioned on a internet discussion site. This was a foolish action because i had never heard the artist and also the 'Belgian avant-garde Big Band' description would put most people off. I am very glad i bought this album because it is the most original album i have bought in a very long time.

ISMS is a compliation of Flat Earth Society's Belgian releases complied by Mike Patton of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle fame. The presense of Patton on this compilation gives us some idea of what the band sound like. Patton is known for exploring the boundaries of music, especially in his Mr Bungle guise. Flat Earth Society have pushed the boundaries of music using Big Band as their medium.
Good examples to use include the track 'Funeral & Binche' which starts out as a mournful almost New Orleans type funeral piece. However this mournful mood quickly descends into a Northern Europen folk tune backed up by an unusual marching drum beat. The tune shouldn't work as described but it does wonderfully. In 'Pune' all the band, apart from the drums and percussion, play the same tune, bass included, the tune is a Chinese influenced numbers, again this shouldn't work and should be a noise, but it does work immensely.
I could go on and describe the lot but i won't. The album needs to be explored, each time you hear it, it says something different.
If you want to hear, raw, cutting edge, and (more importantly) original music i would highly recommend buying this album.

Once again the label, Ipecac, releases an album from an artist I wouldn't have otherwise known about and it pushes all my (albeit peculiar) buttons.
I haven't heard such a good racket in a long time. What we have here is a Belgian Big-Band (Tuba and Clarinets included, plus Electric Guitar and Keyboards). But the music is more avant-garde than the line-up might suggest -reminiscent of that New Orleans Jazz polyphony sound, quite often pushed here to the brink of cacophany. Hints of the Zappa '88 tour sound come through as well, but FES is not an immitator.
One number starts off rather Chinese sounding. You might expect a dragon parade in accompaniment. Another reminds me of the soundtrack from Monty Python and the Quest for The Holy Grail; woodwind and xylophone in unison over disjoint bursts.
Other tracks are incredibly smooth by comparison. Double bass and brushed drums. Sliding fretless electric bass and muted trumpets. This and another track sound incredibly like 2 pieces from The Incredibles Soundtrack. Common influences or have FES been plagiarised? Who knows...

Just about as eclectic as Jazz can get 18 April 2006
By IRate - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
..At times a little too eclectic...This band puts alot on the table with it's compiled 1st american release, and not all of it does work..I do wish they would try for a little less zany, and a little more sincere. When the collective tries too hard to build up sound collages they sometimes suffocate a bit under it's massive weight, but usually the underlying backbone of compositional experience shines through. The most impressive feat here is how many influences come through the jazz format, probally lending itself to the future sounds of a variety of fusion genres more then it does it's own natural genre...Think of the Mr. Bungle (Patton himself handpicked the tracks for this albums release) anything goes mentality, but being executed by actual Jazz musicians...

Good, but not XLS good 3 Feb. 2006
By Bice - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I bought Isms because of the X-Legged Sally connection.

XLS is one of my all-time favorite bands, so when I found

out about Flat Earth Society, I had to hear it. The Isms

CD is good, very good in places, but it's not quite up to

XLS standards. The similarities are there, but it's just

not the quite the same insanely energetic, precise, bizzare,

Zappa-influenced big band jazz. But if you've heard X-Legged

Sally and liked them, then Isms is worth the purchase. You

should enjoy it - just don't get your hopes up to high.
