Sir Samuel & Florence Baker's second expedition up the Nile was not one of exploration as had been the first, but an determined effort to eradicate the abomination of the slave trade along the Nile. They overcame violent opposition and the deviousness of the slave traders, freeing slaves from misery and death, facing personal danger and hardship in the process.
Sam writes well, and the story is engaging, but one has to remember that this is a Victorian writing and not a modern politically correct observer !
For anyone wanting to understand the difficulties faced by those opposing the slave trade, it is an important read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy The Edition Published by The Narrative Press 4 Jun 2008

Don't buy the edition published by The Narrative Press. It contains NO MAPS, and alas, is EXTREMELY carelessly proofed. Typo's and incorrect punctuation abound.
5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure 18 Jan 2013

Samuel Baker was one of those classic British sportsmen who shot anything he came across, all over the world. But his adventures and vivid, details descriptions of his travels are priceless anthropological history. He was one of a kind. I recommend all of his books to anyone interested in practical world history.
