Product Description

Review

A selection of twenty walks focusing on the wildlife, geology and varied scenery of the Isle of Skye. The walks, which range from moderate to strenuous, are accompanied by detailed maps, colour photographs and information on time, distance, terrain and parking. The emphasis throughout is on enjoying the sights and sounds along the way, and there are plenty of pointers on sites of r interest to look for, and what wildlife might be sighted where. The book's 'two churches walk' is billed as the most sheltered walk in north-west Skye and is said to be suitable even for wet weather, as most of the route is covered by trees. When describing each of the walks, author Chris Mitchell is honest about the amount of work needed and any potential hazards such as uneven ground, difficult inclines and even the possibility of severe weather conditions. --Isle of Skye Review

Format: Paperback
With a plethora of books already published about walks in Skye what is the point in this one? well quite simply it takes some of the better known as well as a couple of more obscure walks and actually describes what you are looking at whether it be a geologic feature (there are a LOT on Skye),flora, fauna or where humans have made their mark. Simple, effective and very, very interesting this is more than a guide book but a full history of the island as well. I only wish there were more than the twenty walks described in here but at least you can begin to spot some of the features described here elsewhere on the island whilst doing other walks (I recommend the cicerone guide as the best of the "traditional" style of book) For example I now know what rock tripe looks like and have found it in a couple of other places not described in the book. Marvelous stuff.

As the earlier reviews have stated, this is an interesting book which describes the walks in an ususual style. My only problem is that after reading the reviews and the product description I was expecting a, well, "walker's" guide. For me, the book's walks aren't particularly varied. If your more a stroller, it may be for you, if you want a book to gain experience of Skye many various locations, including the Cuillins, I wouldn't advise it.
Each to their own though!!!

Good illustrations and photographs make this an excellent and unusual guide. I would have liked to see a walk on Raasay included but otherwise this is well worth buying.
